Arc II: Shadows Across the Border
Chapter 3: 9/10/26
The dense canopy of the Km wilderness swallowed what little remained of the day, drowning the tangled forest floor in an oppressive, violet-tinted dusk.
Mith and Jis followed three paces behind Elvin. Every footstep sank into the sponge-like ash that blanketed the soil, kicking up faint plumes of dust that smelled of rusted metal and sulfur. Though their muscles ached and their aura reserves ran shallow from cultivating their new techniques, their senses remained dialed to an edge.
Suddenly, Mith stumbled, clutching his chest.
"Mith?" Jis turned, hand instantly reaching toward his hilt. "What is it?"
Beneath Mith's coat, a brilliant, pulsing light burst through the seams of the fabric. The ancient stone—the artifact bestowed upon him within the high halls of SGN back when their journey first began—had awakened.
It wasn't its usual faint, rhythmic heartbeat. The stone was burning with sudden, incandescent urgency, vibrating so violently that Mith had to pull it out into the open air just to keep his fingers from blistering.
As Mith held the stone in his palm, it didn't just cast a simple halo.
Pulse.
A fracture of radiant, crystalline light erupted from the stone's core, refracting through the mist like a shattered prism. The beams fractured and danced across the gloom, casting distinct, glowing geometric shapes into the air before snapping together. The projected rays swept across the dark clearing, scattering beams of luminescence that locked onto a cluster of overgrown black briars twenty paces off the path.
The light converged, burning away the twisted roots to illuminate an ancient, half-buried basalt slab embedded deep in the earth.
"Look," Mith breathed, his arm trembling under the stone's resonance. "It's pointing at something."
Elvin's hand rested on his broadsword, his wire-rimmed glasses gleaming in the artifact's radiant glare. "Move cautiously. Stones of the High Sanctum do not awaken without a reckoning."
They approached the slab together. As the stone's focused rays struck the ancient surface, the dirt and lichen flaked away as if struck by a divine chisel. The scattered beams of light traced sharp, deliberate grooves directly into the stone face, carving out a luminous sequence of numbers that hovered like branding iron against rock:
9 / 10 / 26
The numbers hummed with an eerie, rhythmic cadence, flickering in unison with the thrumming stone in Mith's palm. It wasn't the wild, voracious pulse of demonic beasts, nor was it the sterile judicial frequency of SGN's high court. It felt like an omen—a temporal timestamp anchored directly between the past and an impending future.
"Nine... ten... twenty-six," Jis whispered, his brow furrowing as he leaned closer. "A date? A coordinate cipher from SGN?"
"It is a temporal stamp," Elvin murmured, kneeling beside the slab, his sharp eyes scrutinizing the light-carved numerals. "The artifact you carry didn't just illuminate an old marker. It resonated with a predetermined frequency embedded in this soil. Someone planted this beacon long ago, waiting for the bearer of the stone to awaken it on this exact path."
"A date..." Mith stared at the figures, feeling a strange chill crawl up his spine. "What does the twenty-sixth mean? A year? A count of days? Or an hour of convergence?"
"Whatever it means," Elvin said, rising slowly to his feet, "in the high archives, markers of this nature are known as Keystones of the Inevitable. They mark a point where two disjointed timelines or fateful paths collide."
As if answering his words, the light from Mith's stone gently receded, settling back into a quiet, warm thrum.
Yet on the slab, the luminous numerals 9 / 10 / 26 remained faintly glowing in the dark, etched into the heart of the Km frontier—a mysterious promise of something waiting on the horizon.
The Keystone's Whispers
The numbers on the slab didn't simply glow; they bled into the fabric of the air itself, the digits 9 / 10 / 26 casting long, violet-tinged shadows that stretched toward the heart of the Km wilderness.
"The date that will change everything," Mith murmured, the words slipping out unbidden, as if spoken through him rather than by him.
The stone in his hand gave a single, deep shudder—like a heartbeat skipping—before cooling into heavy stillness.
Elvin looked at the two young warriors, the reflection of the luminous numerals dancing across his lenses. His voice dropped into a register of solemn finality:
"In the old judicial chronicles, it is written that certain moments are not merely lived—they are collided with. A nexus point where the past loses its grip, the present fractures, and every path laid before you is rewritten in blood and starlight."
Jis tightened his grip on his hilt, his azure aura stirring quietly beneath his skin, ready for whatever storm that date was destined to bring.
"Then let it come," Jis said softly into the encroaching dark. "We're not running anymore."
