Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Eerie Hotel

Polly Sutton chased all the way to the airport. Fortunately, Victor Parker's flight had not yet taken off. Polly Sutton pressed her hand on Victor Parker's arm, panting heavily.

Victor Parker looked at the woman drenched in sweat, then looked back, "Are you being chased by a dog?"

Polly Sutton was too exhausted to roll her eyes, "I, I want to go to L City with you."

"Got addicted to freeloading?" Victor Parker sneered, letting her rest her hand on his arm to catch her breath, "Why are you going this time?"

Andrew Lindsey received Victor Parker's signal, and immediately turned around to book a ticket for Polly Sutton.

"Wood, the wood from Qu Shui Liu Shang, I asked my senior brother yesterday. He said there's a wood auction at the market in L City, and they have that kind of wood. I need to go take a look." Polly Sutton finally caught her breath after a while.

But as Polly Sutton recovered, Victor Parker frowned, "If you want a specific wood, I can buy it for you at the auction. Do you really need to go personally?"

"What do you know about wood?" Polly Sutton finally found something she could use to look down on Victor Parker, "Do you have any idea how much of a gamble it is? Good wood can rival gemstones."

Victor Parker watched the suddenly smug little proud fox in front of him, almost expecting a bushy fox tail to appear.

However, he figured he understood the profit margins in wood better than Polly Sutton did.

Polly Sutton's phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and then at Victor Parker, before hurrying to a side to answer the call.

Victor Parker saw the caller ID; it was that precious little darling's number again.

Polly Sutton lowered her voice to answer the call, still keeping an eye on Victor Parker, feeling guilty.

"Mommy, where are you?" Benny's chilly voice came from the phone.

Polly Sutton suddenly remembered today was the kindergarten summer break day, and there was a ceremony for it. She had promised her two little ones she would attend.

Yet...

"Did Mommy forget again?" Benny's voice was wooden, and Polly Sutton could already imagine his little face.

"Mommy didn't forget, it's just that something came up, so Mrs. Lynn will get there soon. Can you wait a bit?" Polly Sutton explained to her son with guilt, "Mommy promises, it won't happen again!"

"Mommy..."

Benny no longer trusted his mommy.

"Mommy, you explain to brother yourself. Brother has a performance he wants you to see."

Polly Sutton was suddenly frantic, already imagining her elder son's tearful face.

"Mommy, are you here?" Tommy's excited voice came from the phone.

Polly Sutton: "..."

Andrew Lindsey reminded her it was almost time to board. One side was the wood she wanted, the other was her son's kindergarten graduation.

"Not going?"

"Hey? Is Mommy with... uh-uh..."

"Mommy, if you have things to do, go ahead. I'll take care of brother. Goodbye, Mommy."

Polly Sutton looked at the ended call, bewildered. What's going on?

Tommy had his mouth covered by his brother. He seemed to have heard that uncle's voice—could his mommy be with that uncle?

When Benny hung up the children's phone, he released his brother, and they went back inside together. "Grandma will be here soon. Mommy is earning money; we need to behave."

Tommy trailed after him, "Is Mommy with that uncle? I heard it."

"That uncle is rich, right?"

"Yeah."

"Mommy needs to make money, right?"

"Yeah."

"So is it weird for Mommy to be with him?"

Tommy stopped, scratching his little head. It seemed right, but also wrong.

"Yeah, it is." Unable to figure it out, Tommy forgot what he wanted to say and happily followed his brother inside.

Benny sighed lightly, "Having such a brother, what more could one ask for?"

"Who's call got you all out of sorts?" Victor Parker knowingly asked.

"No one's call." Polly Sutton, with her guilt, boarded the plane first.

Victor Parker chuckled, wondering how long she could keep up the act.

When they finally arrived in L City, Polly turned her phone on and saw that Professor Lynn had sent her a video full of Tommy's performance. However, with others around, Polly decided not to watch it, planning to do so leisurely back at the hotel.

Due to a commotion, the hotel had few guests, and those who had booked rooms had checked out.

No one came to welcome Victor Parker this time. Andrew Lindsey completed the check-in, and Victor Parker took Polly Sutton straight upstairs.

In the elevator, Polly Sutton kept looking around, feeling that the silence was unnerving, and started subtly hiding behind Victor Parker.

Victor Parker could see her little movements in the elevator wall reflection, amused that he thought this woman truly wasn't afraid of ghosts.

Upon exiting the elevator, Polly Sutton followed Victor Parker closely. It was so quiet that she could hear a pin drop, and she thought if the lights weren't on, this place would be perfect for filming a ghost movie.

When they reached the room, Victor Parker turned back to look at Polly Sutton, "Want to come in?"

"Who, who wants to go in? I'm here to ward off evil." Polly Sutton said, decisively turning to go to her own room.

Victor Parker chuckled and shut the door behind him.

Shaking nervously, Polly Sutton unlocked her door and rushed inside to lean against it, panting. The hotel indeed gave off an eerie vibe. Indeed, prejudices can lead one to find everything terrifying.

"Knock, knock, knock..."

The sudden sound of knocking made Polly Sutton step away from the door, "Who's there?"

"Miss Sutton, it's me. I'm here to deliver your change of clothes," Andrew Lindsey said from outside the door.

Polly Sutton was considering whether to switch hotels, as life is more important than money.

Andrew Lindsey handed the clothes to Polly Sutton, "Miss Sutton couldn't pack her luggage in time, so these are clothes bought by the staff. Please make do for a couple of days."

"Thank you." Polly Sutton quickly accepted the clothes. As Andrew Lindsey left and she was about to enter the room, a hotel staff member approached, offering to clean the room, explaining they had failed to disinfect it after the last guest's departure.

Not suspecting anything, Polly Sutton let the staff inside to clean. She originally thought to stand in the hallway for a while, but felt that it was too scary at night and instead went to find Victor Parker.

After all, someone like Victor Parker surely even ghosts would avoid. Being near him felt relatively safe.

Once in Victor Parker's room, he was on the phone, so he simply let her in. As for what Victor Parker was saying, Polly Sutton couldn't understand at all, not even recognizing the language.

Polly Sutton could only look around his room, noticing that the lighting was brighter and the tone warmer than her own room.

Polly Sutton: "..."

How could rooms on the same floor of the same hotel have different lighting?

Could it be that the big boss gets special treatment?
