Gu Fei composed herself and slipped in through the window.
She squinted to take in her surroundings. The room was small, containing only a table, a bed, and two chairs.
Two people were lying on the bed. Gu Fei crept closer to see. Though the light was dim, she could still distinguish the man on the outer edge—it was Er Laizi, his head still wrapped in strips of cloth.
With a flick of her wrist, a dagger materialized in her hand. She clamped one hand over Er Laizi's mouth while pricking his arm with the dagger, neither too lightly nor too deeply.
Er Laizi jolted awake. He opened his eyes to a figure looming over him and instinctively tried to shout, but Gu Fei's hand over his mouth trapped the sound in his throat.
Gu Fei's voice was a low whisper. "Don't scream. If you do, this dagger in my hand might slip."
"I'm only here to ask you a few questions. Answer me properly, and I won't kill you."
Xiao Yu lay prone on the roof, listening intently to the sounds below.
