This plot comes from the comics, completely different from the movie. However, Lucas feels the real story is what's portrayed in the comics.
Individual intelligent beings may sacrifice themselves for others, but collective intelligence will never make such grand sacrifices to benefit others.
Individual wisdom may lean toward emotion, but collective wisdom inevitably gravitates toward rationality—more ruthless and selfish.
Sebastian Shaw heard Lucas's explanation and looked confused: "Huh?"
