A group of Soulers flashed into existence on the deck. Without asking for a single word of explanation, their spectral hands snatched the items I had withdrawn from my personal storage—items I had kept hidden even from my closest allies.
They vanished as quickly as they had appeared, turning into streaks of red light that darted toward the surrounding buildings and the closing ranks of the enemy. I kept the chariot moving, steering it with practised ease directly into the heart of the trap. I played the part of the cornered prey to perfection.
"You are going to die!" the monster roared. It coiled its massive haunches and jumped again. Like every time before, the leap was telegraphed, and my chariot slipped past the impact zone by a mere few meters.
