Nancy Sutton found herself caught between laughter and tears at her grandmother's words. They really made her want to laugh, especially about dressing her up beautifully.
"No need, just keep it normal."
Nancy had never had the desire to climb the social ladder. As long as she dressed appropriately, it would be enough.
But her grandmother had different thoughts. Knowing Susan Irving's invitation had ulterior motives, she insisted that Nancy dress so well it would overshadow the others.
"No, she must be dressed beautifully, teacher. If she doesn't look beautiful, I'll cut off your funds here in the future."
The designer realized the grandmother was joking. But this kind-hearted old lady was well-liked, so they immediately made a promise.
"Don't worry, ma'am, this time we'll make sure your granddaughter is the most stunning at the party."
Nancy watched as they planned her look without her input, feeling a mix of amusement. Soon, she realized it was a painfully difficult task.
