I was originally planning to keep up the act for a while longer, until this woman completely got used to it, and then she'd naturally stay.

But now the plan's been ruined, and knowing how sharp-tongued Vera Warner is, there's no way she'll let me off easy.

And someone as proud as Victor Morgan doesn't tolerate any kind of ridicule—unless the person has a death wish.

Vera Warner actually admired him first; he'd obviously done something wrong but still acted so aloof. At least he gave her a chance to speak.

"Mr. Morgan, I think you misunderstood my meaning. I especially came up here—not for anything else, just to tell you, I'm really glad to see you're all right, and to thank you for helping me again just now."

The room fell silent. Victor had expected her to confront him for lying and to start a huge argument.

But none of what he worried about happened; instead, he got these warm words in return.
