Lacy ran as fast as her legs could propel her over the uneven terrain. Despite her best efforts to appear ugly and weak, her father had sold her off to the nearest werewolf tribe. She had hoped that no one would want her and she would be able to remain with her mother and father in their tribe. But after the required human genetic mapping had revealed she was a perfect candidate to carry supernatural species progeny to term, it had automatically forced her into the program.
Supernatural beings had seen a steep decline in their populations after the war. Their existence had been leaked to the non magical communities during the height of the twenty first century pandemic.
They were immediately catalogued as a threat and governments had banded together to eliminate them.
Lacy winced as her ankle rolled over a sharp stone and she cursed as she limped to a stop. The war with the supernatural beasts had lasted two years before both sides had called a truce. While the supernatural beings had more power, humans had more in number. Inhaling deeply, Lacy bent and tightened the laces on her sneakers. If she continues to run south she would end up well outside of pack territory and be safe. She could find a small community to hide away in and no one would have to know about her test results.
Just because the leadership on both sides had agreed to this program, it didn't mean she had to suffer as their broodmare.
A howl rent the air from behind her, spurring Lacy to continue running despite the pain in her ankle. If they caught her now there would be no escape.
