Chapter 21 - Quirk Assessment Test

U.A. Quirk Assessment Test – Class 1-A Grounds

The sun shone bright over U.A.'s training field as Class 1-A gathered for their first real test.

"Alright, everyone!" Aizawa's voice was dry and firm, as he stood before the students in his capture weapon and all-black outfit. "Today's your Quirk Assessment Test. You have no time for orientation. Heroes don't get to waste time."

A few murmurs ran through the class. Most were still processing the abruptness of it.

"Wait, what about the opening ceremony?" Uraraka asked.

"No time for that," Aizawa responded without missing a beat. "You're not here for fun. You're here to become heroes. If you wanted a picnic, you're in the wrong place."

Shin stood calmly beside his friends—Yuki was bouncing slightly on her heels, Toma looked half-asleep, and Shiro's expression was unreadable. But Shin noticed how everyone around them was a mix of nervous and excited.

Aizawa raised a hand, holding a small device. "Kazuki—sorry, Karasuma. You ranked first on the exam, correct?"

Shin gave a polite nod. "Yes, sir."

A few heads turned, surprised. Some students hadn't put a face to the top scorer yet.

Aizawa tossed him a softball. "You got perfect scores across the board. Tell me, how far did you throw a softball in middle school?"

Shin caught it easily. "About 127 meters."

"Try it now. Use your Quirk."

Shin walked to the designated circle, his school uniform neatly pressed, dark hair swept back slightly with the morning breeze. His lean frame radiated quiet strength. He took a breath, crouched slightly, and his muscles tensed with a faint, electric hum as sparks flickered across his arms.

In one smooth motion, he launched the ball with lightning-enhanced force. It vanished into the sky, a booming trail of wind following.

The device beeped.

"2,214.3 meters."

Everyone froze.

"WHAAAT?" Kaminari exclaimed. "That's… OVER A KILOMETER?!"

"Yo, this guy's nuts!" Kirishima grinned, eyes gleaming with excitement.

"That's manly," Sero said, whistling.

Even Todoroki, who stood apart with his usual stoic air, turned slightly, expression narrowing with interest. Bakugou clenched his fists, already sizing Shin up.

Aizawa continued, "That's the kind of power you'll need. But raw strength isn't everything. You'll all be tested in multiple ways today. And the one who comes in last… will be expelled."

Gasps erupted again.

"What?!" Kaminari practically shrieked.

"That's not fair!" Iida stepped forward. "Surely this is some kind of test to motivate us?"

"I'm serious," Aizawa replied. "The real world isn't fair either. Now get into pairs and line up. First test: 50-meter dash."

As the class split up, Shin found himself beside Midoriya, who had a nervous but focused expression.

"Still feeling good?" Shin asked softly.

Midoriya glanced up and nodded. "Better. I've been working hard. And… I think All Might believes in me."

Shin gave him a small smile. "Good. Then show everyone what you've got."

Nearby, Yuki was waving her arms wildly. "Shin! You better not hold back again!"

"I didn't hold back," he replied calmly.

"Oh please! I heard that thunderclap!" she shouted, causing a few heads to turn. "Also—Toma fell asleep standing up again!"

Toma yawned, eyes barely open. "I'm conserving strength."

"I'm going to shake your brain like a maraca if you nap during this," she threatened.

Shiro, nearby, simply muttered, "He might actually enjoy that."

As the dash began, Todoroki, Bakugou, Shin, and Iida quickly became the ones to watch.

Shin completed his run in a blur of lightning, his muscles humming with stored kinetic energy. 2.41 seconds.

"Whoa…" Mina said, wide-eyed.

"Speed and power…" Shoji noted.

Bakugou blasted through with furious explosions. "Outta my way, extras!" 3.97 seconds.

Todoroki froze the entire lane beneath him and slid smoothly to the end. 4.03 seconds.

Iida, running with his Engine quirk, clocked in at 3.65 seconds, huffing with pride.

"This class is insane," Jirou muttered.

Asui turned to her. "Kero. You can say that again."

Ojiro smiled a bit. "But it's kinda fun."

For the grip strength test, Kirishima and Shin tied at the top—Kirishima using his Hardening quirk, and Shin boosting his already-built physique with his quirk's inner muscle boost.

"Dude," Kirishima laughed, fist bumping Shin. "We gotta spar sometime!"

"Sure," Shin replied with a soft chuckle.

During side jumps, Mina danced through them with her nimble frame, while Uraraka used her quirk creatively to float through some. Aoyama tried to sparkle through the challenge and ended up tripping dramatically. Toru passed with ease—though no one could see her doing it.

In the seated toe-touch, Toma finally showed his hidden flexibility. "What, you thought I was just a sleepy noodle?" he said, lying flat on the ground.

Uraraka clapped. "Nice!"

"Thanks. Gonna nap now."

"NO!" Yuki yelled from across the field.

Shiro, meanwhile, kept slipping into near-invisibility for short tests, scoring high despite his quiet effort. His control was eerily precise, only visible when he wanted to be.

As the long jump began, Bakugou launched himself with an explosive boom, clearing the sand pit with ease. "Try and beat THAT, Deku!"

Midoriya looked at his hands. No One For All activation yet. He bit his lip.

Shin caught the look.

And watched Midoriya grit his teeth and jump anyway. It was an average score, but there was determination behind it.

Uraraka was next. "I'm gonna float!"

She levitated, flailed mid-air, and barely made it past the line, landing with a squeal.

Then it came time for the final test: the softball pitch.

Everyone had already seen Shin's throw, so the energy shifted. They were determined to show their own strength.

When Midoriya took the ball, Shin's eyes narrowed. He was holding back. The pressure to not break his body like in canon… but also to prove himself.

Midoriya focused. Sparks danced around his arm.

"SMASH!"

The ball soared with a sonic boom, vanishing from sight.

705.1 meters.

The class was stunned.

"What the hell was that!?" Kaminari shouted.

"Midoriya??" Jirou blinked.

"I thought he didn't HAVE a Quirk!" Mineta panicked.

Uraraka just gawked. "That was amazing!"

All Might, hidden from view on the sidelines, smiled proudly.

Bakugou was frozen in place, jaw tight. "Deku… what the hell did you do?!"

Aizawa sighed. "That's enough. You all performed better than expected. No one is getting expelled… today."

Relief swept the class.

Midoriya breathed out. Shin walked past him and bumped his shoulder lightly. "Told you. Good job."

Midoriya looked up, a grin blooming. "Thanks, Shin."

As the students began walking off to the lockers, chatter exploded.

"I want to team up with that lightning guy in the next event!" Mina said.

"You mean Shin?" Momo asked, glancing at a tablet. "He shattered every record."

"Cool and humble," Tokoyami said solemnly. "He is… worthy."

Aoyama sparkled. "But can he shine like moi?"

"Why is he sparkling again?" Sero muttered.

Yuki shouted from across the group, "HEY SHIN! YOU OWE ME RAMEN FOR NOT TELLING ME YOU CAN THROW INTO SPACE!"

Toma mumbled, "I want ramen too."

"I didn't even say yes yet," Shin said, shaking his head.

Shiro just smiled faintly, trailing behind his friends.

The class was chaotic, colorful, competitive—and more importantly, finally feeling like a team.
