"It's not just the dragon," Malaica mused, pausing beside a rosebush that somehow still bloomed despite the neglect.
"When he looks at you, it's like he's calculating exactly how you might be useful to his cause."
"And what's wrong with that?" Rosaryn asked with a slight laugh.
"A king who doesn't think strategically is a king who doesn't remain king for long. Gods know we've had enough idealistic leaders who led with their hearts instead of their heads."
"Nothing wrong with it," Malaica agreed.
"But it makes me wonder what he'll be like when this war is over—if we're fortunate enough to see its end. Will he be a king who rules with wisdom, or a conqueror who knows only how to take by force?"
"Perhaps both," Rosaryn said practically.
"Perhaps that's what the realm needs right now."
"Enough with Aragon talk, how are you holding up? This war is so taxing on mind and body,' She said.
