The house had gone quiet by the time Fidelia finally left Alex's room.
She had stayed close to her friend all evening, still furious with herself for missing what had been happening right in front of her. Alex had kept the threats to herself, but Fidelia couldn't stop replaying the last few weeks, looking for the moment she should have asked one more question. Called one more time. Noticed.
She stepped into the hallway and called Christopher.
"She's asleep now," she said when he picked up. "Eliott's with her."
"I'm heading home. Olivia's still at the station with him."
Fidelia leaned back against the wall. "I should have been there for her."
"You're there now," Christopher said. "She's going to need you tomorrow too. And the day after that."
She looked back at the closed bedroom door. "I know. I'm not going anywhere."
