Plot : A God Slayer in Fairy Tail who isn't a complete pushover like the canon ones.
Chapter 1
He died in a blaze of fire and explosions at the ripe old age of 19, just on the cusp of adulthood and as he lay there, his body numb as the building collapsed around him, men and women rushing over and around him, he thought back on his measly 19 years of life and decided that he lived it pretty well
Growing up he had basically raised himself, his father leaving when he was young and his mother being an alcoholic he struggled but eventually he found himself, he struggled to make friends as a kid but by the time he was 16 he had made friends who he easily considered family, by 17 he began to pursue his dream of becoming a musician, making music as a hobby while focusing on his studies in becoming a Classical Researcher, sometimes mixing his two passions to create a weird mix that resulted in an Ancient Greek Hero based pop song or something
He eventually got his driver's license at 18 after his mom died, luckily one his friend's family took him in and he stayed with them until he could get the money to move out, he had stayed with them a lot in the past and they were as close to parents as he felt he'd ever get in life. Eventually, when he was 19, his music finally gained some attention, everything seemed to be on the up, he even got a small gig playing in a local bar on the weekends before eventually being offered to be the opening act for a pretty big band that had a tour planned in his city
That's when it happened, a week before he got his chance to shine everything went to shit. To be honest, he doesn't know what really happened, even if he can guess. The bar just, exploded in a flash of fire, glass shattering and shooting everywhere like some sort of grenade.
From his place on the stage, he couldn't safely get out of the way, doubly so when one of the stage lights fell from the ceiling, crushing his body underneath it, trapping him to be consumed by the flames…
The only blessing he could see, as he lay there, staring into the burning ceiling as it crumbles around him, is that he'll be dead long before the flames get to him, try as it might as it licks at his skin like some puppy dog, the smoke was already making him pass out and choke, not to mention the blood loss and ruptured organs he's suffering because of the stage light that crashed on him like a lightning bolt from an ignorant God
And with his final breath, the young man closed his eyes, a single tear streaming from his eye as the world faded around him, a whisper leaving his lips so quietly that even if the screams of fearful civilians and crackling flames weren't there, it would be hard to hear
"I wonder…
...what comes next…?"
Pain
He's just in pain
PainpainpainpainpainpainpainpainpainpainpainpainPaInpAInPAiNpAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAINPAIN-
His breath caught in his throat as light invaded past his eyelids, so bright that it - and the combined pain from moments beforehand that still, 3ven now, has a grasp around him drew a loud - high pitched cry from his being
Opening his eyes, he instantly forced them to shut, the blinding, bright, white light burning his retinas as he felt his body move through the air, being covered in something, another cry crawled from his throat as he felt himself be trapped inside of whatever they had wrapped him in, all he knows is that whatever he found himself wrapped in kept him in its embrace, as tight as the pressure being forced as his body as was beforehand
As his body was moved for him again he felt vertigo set in as the world started spinning around him, bile would've been rising in his throat, threatening to escape if he had any food inside of him, but instead, the only thing leaving his throat was another cry as the world he could not see spun once again
As he felt his body land on something else, he slowly forced his eyes opened, rapidly blinking them open and shut to adjust then to the blinding light, only instead to come face to face with the blurry, obscure visage of what he could only assume to be a giant woman
The sheer size of the woman face compared to his own, coupled with his sudden terrible sight brought another cry from his soul, resulting in the giant woman holding him to let out a startled yelp of… something as she started to bounce him, only making him cry more as the world once again spun
Before he knew what was happened, he had been stolen from the giant woman's arms, being moved by what he could only assume to be another giant, he screwed his eyes shut as the man-turned-child (not that he knows that as of yet) forced himself into a sleep, hoping that when he next awoke everything would be normal
Ever since that first experience of pain and vertigo he had episodes where he would wake up in a strange, giant world, typically feeling the need to take a piss, a shit, to vomit or to eat or drink something, these episodes of his lasted for a while and everyone he had one it seemed like something changed but before long he was finally able to force himself awake long enough to take everything in
What he had found was… shocking, to say the least, it still is.
He hadn't accepted it at first, in fact, he had a complete panic attack which led to him having an existential crisis, which resulted in strangled cries and gibberish falling from his mouth, which led to the same, reoccurring blobby giant to come rushing towards him to soothe him, before long however he was able to calm himself down and accept the facts
He had been reborn, reincarnated, displaced in reality- whatever, fact of the matter is, is that he had found himself in the body of some child in some weird, foreign country
At the very least he now understands why babies cry so much now, they're too sensitive to things, average or even dull light is blinding, his sense of hearing is deafening to even the quietest of noises, his sense of smell is so enhanced that he has to resist the urge to vomit everything he shits himself - an embarrassing fact he can't change just yet - his sense of touch is so high that even the slightest nip or bump feels like he's been crushed by a stage light once again
Everything's so painful that babies cry all of the time
...either that or it's all due to his… unique circumstances that have his senses acting like this so he's not really sure
It's not like babies who remember their past lives are normal and if they are? Well, they were silenced pretty easily
That's a disturbing thought-
Huh?
Blearily and with barely any vision whatsoever, he recognised the door opening at the opposite end of the room he's being contained in, a blob of colour walking through the door that he had come to associate with his… mom? Yeah, she's his mom now, now that's gonna be weird getting used to, hopefully, this mother proves to be better than his last and if not…? Well he had already lived a life devoid of a motherly figure and he can do it again
Plus he is technically a (near) grown-ass man, so he's probably gonna be a weird baby and child anyways
Not like he knew how to act like a kid well enough to fool anyone so he may as well be the freaky kid who learns things really fast or whatever, maybe people will think he's a prodigy or something, that'd be cool, even if it does mean he'd have a lot of expectations thrown on-
Wait…
Is she…? Oh my flying spaghetti Monster she is
A few inches away from his face he could only just focus on the large finger that had been suddenly thrust into his view, said object of his attention now being wiggled back and forth and sometimes being moved in a circular motion, just as he thought the embarrassment to be over a sudden noise penetrated his ears, focusing on the sound he understood it to be his mother's voice, though he only assumed that because it sounded kind of similar to the screams of the woman who had birthed him, except this time instead of screams of pain he could hear the woman making weird singing noises to herself-
Wait…
Oh son of a drunken sailor she's cooing at him
Jeez he should've expected that but it's still so embarrassing
As his eyes moved back to the wiggling finger he felt the sudden urge to grab at it, try as he might to ignore the sudden and weird urge he just couldn't and before he knew what he was doing his hand had moved from its place in the crib he lay into being grasped around the finger of the woman above him, an excited squeal leaving the woman as his body acted
Despite himself he felt a small smile appear on his face, he wouldn't be a good baby, he had lived his life already and didn't have the beautiful naivety that children do, he knew he'd be a piece of work for his new mom but… he'd try to make her happy, his father isn't around anymore - of that he's certain, the man hadn't appeared in any of the brief visions he had of being awake - so he'd do his best to make sure she's happy
It's the least he could do for her after all
A year into his new life and he was already walking and talking, the language of his new home is unlike anything he ever knew from Earth and had taken some getting used to but he had got it down eventually and was able to have decent conversations with his mom and the few friends who came over to visit.
On that topic, his new life began on a small independent island called Thallassia, which's so tiny that it barely even shows up on any maps created and is mostly ignored by any of the larger nations on the mainland of Ishgar or whatever it is it's called.
Due to the island being small everyone knows everyone, the island is so close-knit that the crime rate is effectively zero, doubly so because the citizens are so friendly with each other that if one of them needs any sort of help they can just ask and they're down, the island also doesn't exactly have much in the way of a government either, just a dude called Basil who's in charge, he's effectively the king but the only real difference between him and the other islanders is that he has a slightly bigger house and has to create, enforce and oversee laws
Basil is a chill dude too, he's actually one of his mom's friends and often comes sound for tea. If it weren't for the fact that Basil is married and has a wife of his own, he'd be a bit worried about the man courting his mom
Not that he has anything wrong with it, just creepy is all considering the dudes like, 50…
Moving on, he had started teaching - and being taught - more about the new world he found himself in a few months ago after he decided he knew enough of the language to get through conversations, and boy is this world strange compared to his homeworld! Honestly, it's like somebody had thrown him into a fantasy novel or something!
The world is populated by people who are known as wizards, people who have the ability to manipulate and wield magic of any kinds. These wizards work as soldiers in the armies of countries across the globe, some of them protecting kings and queens, some of them acting like court jesters and most - if not all of them - fighting against the monsters who populate the world
The idea that magic exists and that people have the ability to actually use it is crazy in and of itself, he had fantasised for hours on end about what it'd be like to use magic in his past life knowing that it would never happen and now… now it's a very real possibility that he has magic of some kind and by god is he going to try to find out if he can
Also, not only is magic real but so are Dragons! And so many other creatures he recognised from Mythology, honestly the history of this world is so much more fascinating than his own if only for the fact that the Gods in this world are actually real, living things but also because this world actually teaches the history of its kind
His island is small, roughly 500 people live here in total but the island isn't poor or useless, the island has a grand library filled to the brim with books that range from fantasy stories of fairies and goblins to the telling of the first Dragon King, to the documented history of the lands, the library was the ultimate source of information about everything this world has to offer
And he has complete access to it, every book, every scroll, every slice of paper he had access to.
Well, technically everyone had access to it but semantics, what mattered to him was that the doors to the gigantic library owned by the island had an open-door policy that he could completely access and abuse
And abuse it he did, the library is amazing, the place contains books on every subject, the formation of the world, the emergence of magic, the first mages, the entire anthology of magical creatures, history of the Dragon Kings, the complete history of the Gods, a book dedicated entirely to the names, titles and practices of the gods who populate the land! That's not even counting the fictional section and literally everything else in the library
The place is a goldmine of information and he spent as much time as he could at the library, learning as much as he possibly could, hell he was more well known on the island as 'The Little Librarian' than by his actual name because of how much time he spent in that place-
Oh yeah! His name, in this new life of his he had been gifted the name Valentine, Vali for short even if the islanders insist on calling him Tina - fucking bastards, he's a man damnit! Honestly, he found the name kind of humorous when he had first realised the name was his, he hadn't been born on Valentine's day in this world, they didn't actually have a valentines day but another celebration which he couldn't remember the name of, but in his past life he was born on the 14th of February
He found it quite funny, to be honest, the fact that his Mom had picked a name for him so fitting to his past life without even knowing he had one is quite hilarious… unless whoever put him here put the idea in her head… then it isn't as funny
Anyways, his full name in this life is Valentine Mizushima, a pretty big change from John Doe but he much preferred this new name to his last one so he's happy with it
Now, off to the library he goes, he still wants to learn more about magic
"Valentine, are you coming?"
Hearing his mom's voice woke him up from his thoughts, eyes blinking blearily he turned to look at the woman who had birthed him into this new world and had raised him for all of this time, for a brief moment he felt a sense of foreboding in his gut, that something was about to happen that would change his life forever before he could ponder on it further the feeling left and his mind wandered from it, shrugging it off as nothing as he rushed to hurry up to his mom
"Honestly, Vali you spend so much time in the library I thought you'd have the whole place memorised by now." His mom let out a small chuckle as he finally stood next to her, the two of them walking through the streets of Thallassia towards their home, the older woman coming to pick him up from the library since it was getting so late, the streets of the island may be safe but she didn't take any chances
The streets of Thallassia were paved in cobblestone, the only illumination coming from small fires that hung from poles in a more primitive version of a lamp post, each post being connected by large, hanging decorations from one of the small celebrations the island had celebrated a week ago, honestly walking through the streets made him wonder if this is what it would feel like if he had the ability to walk through ancient Rome or Greece, it doesn't help that the sky itself suffered from no forms of pollution, making the stars that hid behind fog and smoke in his past life so much more visible in his new one
He could understand their weird obsession with stars and constellations now if this is what they looked up to in the night sky
"What were you reading about today Valentine?" His thoughts were once again broken by his mom, eyes moving from the sky towards the woman's - admittedly - beautiful face as he processed her question
"The Origin of Magic." the origin of Magic is something that scholars have debated on for centuries, some believing that Magic was a gift from the Gods - which wouldn't be wrong considering there is a Goddess of Magic - some believed that magic developed from the void which the original gods rose from and some believed that human emotions were the origin of magic. What did Vali think? Well he thought that the answer was all three, that magic did rise from the void but never took form until eventually a god of magic was born, this god then gifted humans the ability to use magic but it's their emotions that granted them the power to do so
Something like that anyway, he doesn't really care about where magic came from but just that it exists and that he could use it
"I thought you'd already read that one?" He could understand her confusion even as he ignored the amusement that danced in her tone, he had read that book before after all, he had sought it out as soon as he found magic enlisted, that as well as a book on magic itself so he could try and learn more about it before teaching himself some spells
Maybe he'd try to learn lightning magic or something, that'd be cool, that or wind magic
"It's interesting" His reply was kept short as they walked further through the town - could it even be considered a town? - he didn't lie however, the different views and the theories behind them are interesting even if the subject still has no true answer just yet
"With the number of books you read, it must be interesting if you keep going back to it" True, out of all the books he'd read from the library only a few of them had really taken his attention so much that he'd go back to learning about it, from the top of his head only four books really kept calling out to him
The Origin of Magic, obviously
Magic through the Ages, a book dedicated to the many different kinds of magic that had been developed throughout time, everything from basic fire magic to Colossal Magic and all of its variants
Magic Creatures of Earth Land, A book all about the different creatures that can be found in Earth Land, some of them he knew to be native to Earth Land like Vulcans and Hane-Sakana but others he knew from his homeworld, things like Giants, Goblins, Wyverns, Chimera's, Griffins, Sphinxes, Basilisks and so much more, the book was so detailed that it included a basic description of teach creatures powers and a small list of their weaknesses!
The Pantheon of Earth Land, A book which he had found completely by accident but called out to his inner history buff, the book contained pages about the mythological religions of Earth Land, telling stories of the Gods and their presence in Earth Land.
This world's mythology is like an amalgamation of multiple different Earthen Mythologies, three Gods rose from the vast empty Chaos who then formed the world, two of the three got married, had kids who were gods and the pantheon expanded and expanded, the worlds pantheon isn't as large as the Hindi Pantheon - seriously, what religion needs 33 Million deities in it?! - but more like the Greek Pantheon except instead of having 12 main deities they have 5
In this world the 'King of the Gods' is a being named Ebus, he was the first god to rise from the vast chaos and with him the Earth formed, without him there would be nothing, much like the story of Gaea in Greek Mythology Ebus wished for a wife and soon the sky formed and a Goddess named Arianne rose from the Chaos, to complete the trilogy a third and God rose from the chaos, a Goddess named Iva who became the Goddess of the Seas and Oceans
These three are this worlds 'Big Three Gods', the most powerful beings in the world who rule over everything
Well anyways, after these three were born two other deities followed suit, one being Thiris The Goddess of Light and her brother/husband Ixbris The God of Darkness, with the first five elements born they formed a sort of council of Gods which would govern the universe, obviously more gods were born after this, their unions creating more and more deities as time went on but they were the original gods, the main ones who hold all the power-
"Valentine? Honestly Vali you need to stop zoning out like that, we're at home already. Now, off to bed, we're meeting with Basil and Selene tomorrow at the town centre, apparently there's an announcement being made." With a sigh Vali nodded his head, giving his mom's leg a quick hug he walked further throughout their small home, changing out of his clothes and into his sleepwear he climbed into the small bed he had been given a few months back before falling into a deep slumber
-/-
Vali woke up to screams, eyes shooting open as the panicked cries of his fellow islanders screamed in fear, panic and agony. Jumping from his bed he rushed over to the window of his room, throwing the curtains open only for his eyes to widen in shock as the visage of his island town burning greeted him, from his window he could see the fires spreading from home to home and large explosions rattle throughout the village
'What the hells happening? Is a dark guild attacking or something?!' His panic thoughts cut off quickly as the object of all the terror made its presence, known as down from the heavens a large, grey dragon swooped, bat-like wings spread out from its spine with large spikes sticking out from all over its large body, as the ultimate evolution of lizards swooped overhead his eyes locked onto the creates face, the demonic visage of a horned grey demon etched itself in his mind as it flapped its wings into the air, its jaw opening as it let loose a powerful blast from its mouth of ash, destroying another part of the village like it was nothing
"Vali-" The voice of his mother echoed throughout their home but whatever the woman was going to say was cut off by a large explosion, with his heart pounding he rushing out of his bedroom, his little legs running out of his room, almost toppling into his mother who had grabbed onto the railing of the stairs like a lifeline in a clear attempt to try to find him
"We need to go Vali, into the woods!" The woman didn't allow him the chance to move on his own, instead of grabbing his tiny body and heaving him into her arms as she began rushing out of their shared home.
The two of them moved throughout the burning streets of Thallassia with practised ease, dodging and weaving between people as they all tried to escape the carnage only to be blocked off by the explosions caused by the dragon's attacks or being trapped by the flames said explosions left behind, the two weaved their way through the streets, narrowly dodging islanders, rubble and explosions alike until; they eventually got the border of the village, where the islands civilisation became a dense foliage of trees
Just as it seemed the two were about to escape everything went wrong
The dragon - having finished its assault on the town itself - turned its attention to any survivors of its attacks, the lucky few who escape were quickly tracked down by the dragon, easily becoming it's new form of attention as it played with them with its magic, some it would send attacks of ash and soot, some it would snatch up with its large hands, dropping them it's wide, salivating mouth as it feasted on his kinsmen
Just as his mother and he reached the forest a large beam of ash shot through the trees, sending earth and nature alike flying causing the mother-son duo to dodge out of the way, the sudden attack and it's proximity causing the new mother to accidentally toss her child in what she would quickly believe to be a fatal mistake, one that would cost her son and her their loves, but as she felt the giant, ashy hand grab a hold of her waist the woman felt a small glimmer of hope that the beast would believe her child dead and leave him alone, a small bit of joy that her son had escaped her arms when he did as he wouldn't be subjected to the fate she was about to be forced into
The air passing by her the woman closed her eyes as time slowed down, a prayer leaving her lips as that was drowned out by the wind and chaos created by the dragon's attack before all the woman knew was darkness and pain
Unknown to all, this one moment, this one attack caused by this one dragon which would lead to this one prayer would forever shape the world as they knew it
At the bottom of the ocean, a palace made of beautiful blue stone rested, the palace is a marvel to behold, crafted by the Divine Architect of the Gods it's only right that the palace constructed would be extraordinarily beautiful and I any saw it, they'd easily consider it to be one of the wonders of the world
Located inside the palace a large, long room remained empty of all by a throne decorated by a beautiful coral reef and a large, silk-lined carpet which led from the doors of the room to the base of the throne itself, said throne was currently being occupied by a beautiful woman who looked to be in her mid 20, with beautiful, perfectly tanned skin that held no blemishes or signs of ageing, raven black hair that fell in ringlets all the way down to the small of her back with the most beautiful pair of sea-green eyes that would enchant men and women alike with only a singular glance
Said woman let out a resourceful sigh as she felt one of her main places of worship crumble under the magic of a dragon, even now moments after the attack she could still hear the frantic prayers of her loyal followers calling out to her for help, in an instant the island of 200+ people had been completely wiped out and she had been to busy commanding the seas to notice
As the prayers continued to flood through her head and images of the carnage dealt by the dragon danced through her mind she felt the very last prayers of her followers coming in, with a tired sigh the woman stood from her throne, the pitch-black dress she wore falling perfectly into place as she stood before she disappeared in a flash
In a flash of green light, the woman found herself in the carnage laid streets of Thallassia, a solemn look overcame her face as she walked past the deceased bodies of her followers, the further and further she walked into the town the sadder she became for the loyal believers located on the island and before she knew what had happened her feet had taken her to the edge of the city
For a brief moment, the Goddess felt a small amount of hope that some of her followers had escaped the carnage of the island and so with a quick pulse of her divine power she searched the island for any living humans, a depressed expression crossing her face when she came up completely blank in her search except-
Eyes shooting open the woman turned in a seemingly random location, sea-green eyes swirling in joy as she felt a single survivor of the carnage and before the deity knew what she was doing she had transformed her body into water, shooting through the village - unintentionally dowsing any fires she came across - to where she could feel her islands only survivor and as she arrived on the scene the woman reformed into her human form to find herself standing above a child of only three years of age, who had a lump forming on his head from where he had been thrown against a tree, knocking him out as he escaped
Briefly, a prayer passed through her mind again, the prayer of a woman who had been swallowed by the dragon who had prayed to her to protect her child and seeing as this is the only child around and the only one to survive the goddess hoped that she could honour the mothers dying request and at least save this child
After a moment of deliberation, the woman reached down and picked up the child, cradling the boy in her arms as if he were her own spawn before the duo disappeared in a flash of light, leaving a burning island behind them as they returned to the Sea Goddesses home
