Chapter 6 - Aftermath

Once the office door closed, the hallway noise faded.

Coach Henry sat behind his desk and looked Adam over.

Adam stood near the opposite chair with his backpack hanging from one shoulder. Carter's blood covered the knuckles of his right hand, some of it already drying between his fingers. His lower lip still stung where it had split.

Henry pointed to the chair. "Sit down."

Adam sat.

For several seconds, Henry said nothing.

Adam disliked that more than yelling.

Henry had always been difficult to read. Most teachers filled silence because it made them uncomfortable. Henry seemed perfectly content to let it sit until someone else broke first.

Adam waited.

Henry finally leaned back. "Start at the beginning."

Adam nodded.

"Carter approached me at 11:58 outside my classroom."

Henry's eyebrows rose slightly.

Adam continued.

"He asked why you chose me for the district roster. I told him I didn't know. He said I'd taken his spot. I told him you made the decision."

"Which I did," Henry followed along.

"He followed me toward the cafeteria. Kept bothering me. Knocked my phone away when I tried to check it. I tried to leave. At 12:31 he pushed me for the first time."

Henry leaned forward.

"You know the exact time?"

"I checked."

"Why?"

Adam hesitated.

"Just a habit."

Henry held his gaze for a second longer than Adam liked.

"Go on."

"After that he kept pushing me. I tried to leave. He blocked me twice. Then he hit me."

"How many times?"

"5 clean. 2 glanced."

Henry stared at him.

Adam realized that probably had not sounded normal.

He should have said a lot, or several. Too late now.

"5 clean," Henry repeated.

Adam nodded.

"And you're sure about the other 2?"

"Yes."

Henry tapped one finger against the desk. "Did you hit him back?"

"Not at first."

"Why?"

"I didn't want to make it worse."

It wasn't the whole reason, but it wasn't a lie either.

Tenet 20. Protect your identity unless it becomes necessary.

Getting punched in front of half the school was unpleasant. Explaining why he knew how to put a larger senior on the floor in seconds would have been worse. That had been the intent.

Until Carter threatened Lena.

Henry's voice pulled him back.

"And after that?"

Adam gave him the rest of the sequence. Carter blocking him. The threat toward Lena.

He left out the moment the decision had become immediate when Tenet 1 simply outweighed everything else.

Protect your family and their interests.

Henry listened without interrupting. When Adam finished, the coach folded his arms.

"What changed?"

Adam looked at him.

"You were trying to walk away for several minutes," Henry said. "Then suddenly you weren't."

Adam's fingers tightened slightly against his knee.

"I lost my temper. He threatened my sister."

Henry's expression did not change.

"That doesn't strike me as something you do often."

"No, not really.."

"I figured."

Silence returned.

Adam stared at a scratch near the edge of Henry's desk and resisted the urge to check the room again.

One door. 2 windows. Filing cabinet behind Henry. Phone on the desk. No reason to catalog any of it in his mind, but he did anyway.

Henry exhaled through his nose.

"Carter's been wound tight about districts. Things at home haven't been easy, and he's convinced a good race there could help him with college."

Adam looked back at him.

"I didn't choose myself."

"I know. And it doesn't excuse what he did."

Henry tapped the desk again.

"The first punch is on him. I've already got enough witnesses to make that part clear."

Adam hadn't expected that, he expected a more stern lecture.

"But," Henry continued, "I'm not ignoring what happened afterward."

Adam's shoulders tightened.

Henry's eyes flicked to the movement.

"You had him under control. You could've stopped earlier."

The second strike came back to Adam's thoughts.

Carter already on the floor.

His arm controlled.

Adam looked toward the floor. "Yes."

Henry let the answer sit.

"Save the rest for administration. They'll ask you again later."

"Understood."

"And I'm calling your father."

Adam looked up. His stomach tightened immediately.

One corner of Henry's mouth twitched toward a smile. Adam found that irritating.

"I'll be calling Carter's family too," Henry said. "Administration will decide discipline after everyone's statements are in. You may be suspended."

Adam nodded.

"I understand."

"You're taking that pretty well."

"What else am I supposed to do?"

Henry was quiet for a moment.

"Fair point."

Adam reached for his backpack.

"Not yet."

His hand stopped.

Henry's tone had changed. Not harsher, only more serious.

Adam looked back at him.

Henry's eyes moved from Adam's hands to his posture, then his feet. Adam recognized the pattern immediately: assessment.

His father did the same thing.

"Where did you learn to fight like that?" Henry asked.

Adam kept his expression blank.

"My dad."

"Your dad taught you?"

"Yes."

Henry leaned back slightly. "Was he military?"

"Yes. Army."

That part was safe. It was also true. Grigori's Army years were part of the family story.

Everything after that was not.

Henry repeated the word quietly. "Army."

Adam adjusted his backpack higher on his shoulder. "Anything else?"

Henry held his gaze. Then he picked up his phone.

"Yeah. One more thing."

Adam's attention sharpened.

Henry turned the screen around.

A video filled it.

The hallway, the crowd, Carter, and him.

Someone had uploaded the fight already.

Of course they had.

Henry replayed the important part: Adam retreating, Carter advancing, then Carter looking toward Lena.

The change in Adam was immediate. Seconds later Carter was on the floor.

Two strikes, and it was over.

Adam hated seeing it from the outside.

The clip ended and Henry lowered the phone.

Adam could feel his pulse in his neck.

Tenet 20. Protect your identity unless it becomes necessary.

Necessary did not mean free from consequences.

"How many people have that?" Adam asked.

Henry gave him a strange look. "Probably half the school by now."

Adam resisted the urge to close his eyes.

Great.

"Anything else?" he asked again.

Henry studied him for another second.

"No. Go get yourself cleaned up. Administration will send for you when they're ready."

Adam stood.

"And Adam?"

He stopped at the door.

Henry's voice was calmer now.

"I don't care who taught you. Next time, get a teacher before it reaches that point."

"I tried to leave."

"I know." Henry paused. "Next time, find one of us while you're doing it. You're lucky Leone told on us as soon as he could."

Adam nodded once.

"Yes, Coach."

He stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind him.

The corridor was almost empty now. Adam touched the split in his lip and immediately regretted it. By evening his cheek would probably be purple.

Mom was going to notice.

That bothered him considerably more than Carter had.

As he headed toward the restroom, the glass beside the classroom doors caught movement behind him.

Hannah Martin stood near the far corner, pretending not to watch him.

Adam kept walking. That made 4 incidents now: the wrong-direction walk home, cross-country practice, the party, and this.

He should probably ask her directly.

That would be the normal thing to do.

Unfortunately, Adam had very little confidence in what counted as normal anymore.

His phone vibrated in his pocket.

For 1 hopeful second, he wondered whether it was Daryl. It was Lena.

Where are you?

Another message appeared before he could answer.

And don't say nothing happened.

Adam stared at the screen.

A third message arrived.

We're talking after classes.

He closed his eyes for half a second.

Henry was calling Dad.

Lena had seen too much.

There was already a video online.

And Neil and Jack were coming over for dinner tonight. By then, the fight would already have followed him home.

Adam slipped the phone back into his pocket.

He exhaled and leaned back against the wall.

Adam made it only a few steps before Daryl came jogging around the corner.

"Bro. There you are. Norris let me come look for you."

"Why?"

"Emotional support." Daryl grinned. "And because I wouldn't stop asking."

"That sounds more likely."

Daryl fell into step beside him, then glanced at the bruising. "You good bruh?"

"Yes."

After a moment, Adam said, "Thanks for standing up for Lena."

Daryl's expression turned serious. "Don't mention it. I was trying to find a teacher before it got that bad… I think I wasn't too late though.."

Adam nodded. Henry had just told him the same thing in different words.

Within seconds Daryl was back to guessing which martial art Adam had used. Adam let him talk.

The next 2 classes passed slowly. The fight followed Adam into both of them in whispers and glances, with Hannah occasionally looking his way. He still couldn't tell why.

Near the end of Mr. Norris's class, the door opened.

Coach Henry stepped inside.

Grigori stood behind him in his postal uniform.

Adam's stomach sank.

"Dad."

Grigori's eyes settled on him. His expression gave away nothing.

The whispering around the room immediately picked up.

Mr. Norris paused at the front of the class. "Adam, you're excused."

Adam stood and slung his backpack over one shoulder.

Daryl caught lightly at his sleeve as he passed. "Good luck, dude."

Adam gave him a flat look.

Daryl released him.

The walk to the assistant principal's office was silent.

Grigori was still dressed for his route, his blue postal shirt creased at the shoulders and a faint smear of dust along one sleeve. He hadn't asked whether Adam was hurt. He hadn't asked what happened.

He simply walked beside him. Adam couldn't tell whether he was angry.

Henry glanced between them once or twice, but said nothing.

Outside the office, Carter sat with gauze beneath his nose, his nostrils stuffed with what looked like tissues. His parents stood beside him: his father in a grease marked work jacket, his mother still wearing hospital scrubs. Both looked like they had been pulled away from work with no warning.

Mrs. Phillips's jaw tightened when Adam approached. Mr. Phillips touched her arm and gave a small shake of his head.

Inside, the assistant principal motioned them toward the chairs. Henry remained near the wall.

"I assume everyone knows why we're here."

Grigori sat. Adam took the chair beside him.

Neither answered.

The assistant principal summarized the statements and the video: Carter had confronted Adam over the district roster, repeatedly blocked his attempts to leave, struck first, and threatened Lena. Adam had then put Carter on the floor and struck him once more after he was already under control.

Carter stared at his hands. Mr. Phillips mostly watched his son.

"Mr. and Mrs. Phillips," the assistant principal said, "Carter initiated the fight. The video and the witness statements are clear on that. The district roster, frustration, whatever was happening before it started, none of it excuses what he did."

Mrs. Phillips opened her mouth.

"And before you ask," he continued, "athletics are not part of this decision. Carter will be suspended. Coach Henry will handle any cross-country consequences separately."

Her expression hardened.

The assistant principal turned to Adam.

"You tried to disengage several times. That matters. But you also had Carter under control before the last strike."

Adam nodded once. "Yes, sir."

"You're not being suspended. This is still going in the disciplinary report, and those last strikes are the reason you're sitting here instead of being sent straight back to class. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir."

Mrs. Phillips stared at him. "He beat my son unconscious."

"Your son threatened my daughter," Grigori said.

His voice was calm. Almost too calm.

Mrs. Phillips turned toward him. "And that gives him the right to do that?"

"No."

Adam looked at his father.

Grigori didn't look back.

"Adam should have stopped once Carter was no longer a threat," he continued. "We'll deal with that at home. But your son chose to start the fight, and he chose to threaten Lena. I expect both things to be taken seriously."

"They are," the assistant principal said.

Adam recognized the tone Grigori was using. The one he used with teachers, neighbors, and anyone else who knew him only as a mailman and a father.

Mr. Phillips rubbed a hand across his face, then looked toward Adam and Grigori.

"We're sorry," he said quietly. "For all of it."

Mrs. Phillips looked at him in disbelief.

Carter still didn't say anything, kept his eyes on the floor.

The assistant principal had both families sign the disciplinary paperwork, then dismissed them.

It was 3:13 PM. Adam glanced at the analog clock on the wall.

Adam did his best not to show his relief. At least the school's decision was one less problem to deal with.

The Phillips family headed down the opposite hallway, though Mrs. Phillips kept glaring at Adam until they were out of sight.

"Ignore her," Grigori said.

Adam did.

"I'm going back to my route. You still have practice?"

"Yes, Dad."

"Parking lot, 5pm. Got it?"

"Understood."

Grigori motioned him back toward class.

Adam nodded.

Only after Grigori disappeared around the corner did Adam let himself exhale.

The school had decided what happened. Grigori hadn't.

His verdict would come at 5pm.

Whether it was just a stern lecture, or the belt, he didn't know yet.
