Chapter 1 - Silent war

The room was quieter than it used to be.

Not silent—just… wrong.

Keyboards clicked. Screens flickered. Someone dragged a chair across the floor.

Work was still getting done.

Just not together.

Kai leaned back in his chair, one foot hooked loosely against the leg of his desk, eyes half-lidded as he stared at the glowing screen in front of him.

Same workspace. Same people.

Different atmosphere.

"…this place got boring fast."

Ren's voice cut through the hum of machines, lazy, almost amused.

A few heads turned.

Most didn't.

Kai didn't look up.

"Try harder," he said.

Ren scoffed. "What, you want a full routine? I can start charging for entertainment."

No one laughed.

Ren paused.

Just a second.

Then he grinned anyway.

"Damn. Tough crowd."

Across the room—

"Can we just talk about this properly for once?"

Aiden.

Standing.

Again.

A small group lingered near the far wall, their workstations left idle, tension thick between them.

"No one's stopping you," someone muttered.

"Yeah," another added, "but what's the point? We still have to work with each other anyway."

"That's exactly why we should—"

"Or we could just stop pretending this is fixable."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Kai glanced over briefly.

Same conversation.

Different day.

Same result.

He looked back at his screen.

"…I messed up, didn't I?"

Eli.

Right on schedule.

Kai didn't turn.

"You say that a lot."

"I mean it this time."

"You always do."

Eli stepped closer, voice lowering.

"If I didn't push them to share the blame… if I just let it play out—maybe this wouldn't have happened."

Kai exhaled softly.

"You did what made sense."

"That doesn't mean it was right."

Kai shrugged.

"Usually does."

Eli let out a dry laugh.

"That's not comforting."

"Wasn't trying to be."

Across the room—

Aiden's voice rose again.

"So we're just going to work like this? Like nothing happened?"

Marcus didn't even look up from his terminal.

"A rule was broken."

"That's not the point."

"That is the point."

Ren leaned slightly toward Kai.

"Round four," he whispered. "You think this one ends with someone storming out or just passive-aggressive silence?"

Kai didn't respond.

Ren nodded to himself. "Yeah, same."

Near the back—

Darius sat alone at his station.

No one had told him to move.

No one needed to.

The empty desks around him made the decision for everyone else.

His screen was on.

Work open.

Untouched.

Every now and then, someone would glance at him.

Then quickly look away.

On the opposite side—

Leon worked quietly.

Focused.

Unaffected, at least on the surface.

People sat near him.

But no one spoke.

At the far end of the room—

The leader leaned against a desk, scrolling through his device like he wasn't part of the same group he was supposed to be managing.

Aiden noticed.

Of course he did.

"You're seriously not going to do anything?" Aiden snapped.

The leader didn't look up.

"What do you want me to do?"

Aiden stared at him.

"You're the one in charge."

"And?"

That word landed harder than it should have.

For a moment—

Even the typing slowed.

Then—

The door slid open.

Ms. Sera stepped in.

Her presence alone used to be enough to settle things.

She stopped just inside.

Took in the room.

The distance.

The silence.

The way no one was really working together anymore.

Before—

She would've stepped in immediately.

Said something.

Fixed something.

Now—

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

"…Focus on your assignments," she said finally.

Her voice was calm.

But tired.

People turned back to their screens.

Not because they wanted to.

Because it was easier.

Kai closed his eyes briefly.

Same cycle.

Different day.

From the corner of his eye—

Eli looked at him again.

Waiting.

For something.

Anything.

Kai looked away.

Ren stretched, arms behind his head.

"Man," he said casually, "weekends can't come fast enough."

No one responded.

Across the room—

Aiden sat down slowly, jaw tight.

Marcus continued working.

Darius didn't move.

Leon didn't look up.

The leader went back to his screen.

Ms. Sera stood at the front.

Quiet.

Kai exhaled.

This was never going to work.

Somewhere in the back of his mind—

Voices echoed.

Warnings that didn't land.

"If you do this now, you're going to tear everything apart."

Kai opened his eyes.

Looked at the screen.

Didn't type anything.

And said nothing

The first day

The first thing they noticed wasn't the size.

It was the waiting.

People stood in loose clusters, bags at their feet, conversations half-formed and unfinished. No one knew where to go yet. No one had been told.

Everything felt… paused.

"…so we're really staying here the whole week?"

Eli's voice was quieter than most, but it carried.

Kai stood beside him, hands in his pockets, scanning the room.

"Looks like it."

"Weekends back home, right?"

"Yeah."

Eli let out a small breath.

"…that's still a lot."

Kai didn't respond.

Around them, Operatives shifted, trying to find some kind of structure where there wasn't one yet.

Eli glanced around.

Then—

"…we should probably organize a bit."

Kai looked at him.

"Just for now," Eli added quickly. "Until they assign us. It'll be easier if we don't just stand around."

Kai gave a small shrug.

"Go ahead."

That was enough.

Eli stepped forward slightly.

"Uh—if anyone wants, we can just split into smaller groups first. Nothing permanent. Just… easier to manage."

A few people nodded.

Others followed.

It wasn't leadership.

But it worked.

Kai watched from where he stood.

Eli wasn't forcing it.

Just… filling space that needed to be filled.

"…you always do this," Kai muttered.

Eli glanced back. "Do what?"

"Step in."

Eli hesitated.

"…someone has to."

Kai didn't reply.

Then—

The doors opened.

The room shifted instantly.

Not because of what was said.

Because of who walked in.

Six of them.

Together.

They didn't hesitate.

Didn't look around like everyone else.

Didn't need to.

Unit Leads.

At the center—

Cain. Hands in his pockets. Expression unreadable.

Beside him—

Aiden. Focused.

Marcus. Still.

Leon. Quiet.

Darius—

Already talking.

"…I'm just saying, if they expect us to manage this many people at once, that's just inefficient. There's no way the workload distribution—"

Marcus cut in.

"Then work faster."

"That's not what I'm saying."

Leon walked slightly ahead of them.

Silent.

Darius nudged him.

"Back me up here."

Leon didn't even look at him.

"Just do the work."

Darius scoffed.

"You've always been like that."

It sounded casual.

Like history.

From across the room—

Kai noticed.

Of course he did.

At the front—

Ms. Sera stepped forward.

"Operatives."

The room settled.

"These are your Unit Leads."

Now—

Everyone was paying attention.

"Assignments will be distributed."

The screen lit up.

Names shifted.

Groups formed.

"Ren — Unit Lead. Unit Three."

A pause.

Then—

"Assigned Operative: Kai."

Kai looked at the screen.

Then—

at Ren.

Ren grinned slightly.

Kai held the look for a second.

Then—

rolled his eyes.

And started walking.

"…that's cold," Ren muttered, following after.

Elsewhere—

"Darius. Marcus. Unit Five."

"Assigned Operative: Eli."

Eli froze for just a second.

Then stepped forward.

Darius was already mid-sentence.

"…alright, listen, we keep this simple, yeah? No overworking, no unnecessary stress—"

Marcus cut in.

"We do the work properly."

"Yeah, yeah, that too."

Eli stood between them.

The difference was immediate.

Before—

People were listening to him.

Now—

No one was.

From the front—

Cain glanced at his group briefly.

Then looked away.

"Sort yourselves out."

Aiden frowned slightly.

Kai noticed that too.

And just like that—

Everything shifted.

The first few days settled into something that almost felt normal.

Work.

Schedules.

Silence.

"So hypothetically," Ren said, spinning slightly in his chair, "if I do half the work now and half later, that's still 100%, right?"

Kai didn't look up.

"…nothing?" Ren leaned forward. "Not even a reaction?"

Kai glanced at him.

Then rolled his eyes.

And went back to work.

"…wow," Ren leaned back. "That's worse than getting scolded."

No response.

Across the floor—

Unit Five wasn't as smooth.

"…I'm just saying, pacing matters. You can't just rush everything."

Darius leaned back, talking more than doing.

"We're behind," Marcus replied.

"Not if you think long-term."

"We're behind now."

Eli looked between them.

"…we can split it differently?"

Darius pointed at him.

"Exactly. That's what I've been saying."

Marcus didn't respond.

Just kept working.

Eli hesitated.

Then quietly picked up the extra work.

No one stopped him.

From across the room—

Kai noticed.

Of course he did.

Near the center—

Darius spotted Leon passing by.

"Yo."

Leon stopped.

"You settling in alright?" Darius asked.

"Yeah."

"See? Told you this place isn't that bad."

Leon gave a small nod.

Then left.

Darius watched him for a second.

Then turned back.

"…anyway—"

Kai noticed that too.

From the front—

Aiden was already speaking again.

"…people should have a say in their assignments."

Marcus didn't look up.

"That's not how it works."

"Then it should."

No response.

At the far end—

Cain leaned against a desk.

Scrolling.

Doing nothing.

Everything felt stable.

Functional.

From the outside—

It looked like a good system.

A good structure.

A good group.

And if you didn't look too closely—

Darius and Leon looked like they were on the same side.

Like they always had been.

Kai leaned back slightly.

Watching.

Noticing.

But saying nothing

It didn't take long for the place to settle into a rhythm.

Wake.

Train.

Work.

Repeat.

At first, it felt forced.

By the end of the first week—

It just felt normal.

Training Floor

The sound of movement filled the space—footsteps, instructions, the dull impact of repeated drills.

"Again."

Aiden's voice.

Clear.

Controlled.

A group reset their positions almost immediately.

No hesitation.

No complaints.

Across the floor—

Marcus adjusted his stance with precision, movements efficient, clean.

Beside him—

Eli tried to mirror it.

"…like this?" Eli asked, slightly off-balance.

"No."

Marcus stepped forward, repositioning his arm without hesitation.

"Stability first. Then speed."

Eli nodded quickly.

"Right—okay."

Behind them—

Darius leaned against the railing.

Watching.

"…you guys are taking this way too seriously."

Neither of them responded.

Darius sighed.

"Relax a bit. It's just training."

Marcus didn't even look at him.

"Then fall behind."

Darius clicked his tongue.

"Or we just don't overdo it."

Eli hesitated.

Looked between them.

Then quietly went back to practicing.

Darius didn't move.

From across the room—

Kai noticed.

Of course he did.

Kai's Side

Kai moved through the drills without much effort.

Not flashy.

Not fast.

Just… efficient.

No wasted motion.

No hesitation.

"…you make that look really boring."

Ren.

Kai didn't turn.

"You're supposed to struggle a bit, you know. Makes the rest of us feel better."

Kai completed the sequence.

Reset.

Ren was still there.

He wasn't supposed to be.

"…don't you have your own unit?" Kai said.

"I do."

"…and?"

Ren shrugged.

"I'm here."

Kai glanced at him.

Then looked away.

Ren grinned slightly.

"Relax. I'm supervising."

Kai rolled his eyes.

And continued.

Ren stayed.

Later — Work Floor

The shift from training to work was immediate.

Screens lit up.

Tasks loaded.

Conversations dropped.

Kai sat at his station, scanning through data faster than most people around him could process it.

"…wait, how did you even—"

Someone leaned over his shoulder.

Kai didn't look up.

"Pattern repeats."

"What pattern?"

Kai pointed once.

Brief.

The person blinked.

"…oh."

"Fix it there," Kai said.

And went back to his own screen.

Across the room—

Ren watched.

Then—

walked over.

"…you're not even trying, are you?"

Kai didn't respond.

Ren leaned slightly on the desk beside him.

"You just… get it."

Kai scrolled.

Clicked.

Adjusted.

"…it's not complicated."

Ren stared at the screen.

Then at him.

"…you're annoying."

Kai rolled his eyes again.

Ren smirked.

"Hey," someone called from another station, "we need a second check on this."

A pause.

Then—

"Get Kai."

Ren blinked.

"…they didn't even hesitate."

Kai stood up.

Subject Matter Work

The section was quieter.

More controlled.

Less crowded.

Usually reserved for Unit Leads.

Kai wasn't one.

Didn't matter.

"…this doesn't align."

Kai pointed at the screen.

Two senior staff stood beside him.

Listening.

"What's the issue?" one of them asked.

"Input sequence is off. It loops wrong here."

A short pause.

Then—

"…he's right."

Adjustments were made.

Quickly.

Ren stood a few steps behind.

Watching.

"…you're not even supposed to be here," he said quietly.

Kai didn't respond.

"Pretty sure this is my job," Ren added.

Kai glanced at him briefly.

Then—

looked back at the screen.

"Then do it."

Ren huffed a quiet laugh.

"…yeah, alright."

But he didn't leave.

End of Day

The room was quieter again.

Not tense.

Not yet.

Just tired.

Eli sat with his shoulders slightly hunched, finishing work that wasn't originally his.

Darius was talking.

Again.

"…I'm just saying, if we spaced things out better, we wouldn't even need to rush like this."

Marcus didn't respond.

Eli nodded faintly.

Not because he agreed.

Because it was easier.

Across the room—

Aiden stood near Ms. Sera.

Speaking.

"…if we optimize roles early, we won't have to keep adjusting later."

She listened.

Considered.

Didn't answer immediately.

At the far end—

Cain leaned against a desk.

Scrolling.

Unchanged.

Kai & Ren

Kai packed up slowly.

Ren dropped into the seat across from him.

"…you always this quiet?"

Kai zipped his bag.

"…you always this loud?"

Ren grinned.

"Only when it works."

Kai stood.

Ren stood too.

"…you don't have to follow me," Kai said.

"I know."

"…then don't."

Ren shrugged.

"Or I could."

Kai looked at him.

A second longer this time.

Then—

turned and walked.

Ren followed anyway.

"…you're going to get used to me," Ren said.

Kai didn't respond.

But he didn't tell him to leave again.

And for now—

that was enough.

Elsewhere

Darius laughed at something he said himself.

Marcus kept working.

Eli stayed quiet.

Leon passed by.

Didn't stop.

But for a brief second—

His eyes flicked toward Darius.

Then away.

Too quick to matter.

For now

The second Week

By the second week, the rhythm wasn't new anymore.

It was expected.

Training got sharper.

Mistakes got called out faster.

And people stopped pretending this was temporary.

Training Floor

"Again."

Aiden's voice cut through the space, steady as ever.

Operatives reset almost immediately.

Eli followed, a step slower than the rest, trying to match Marcus beside him.

"…you're leaning too much," Marcus said without looking.

Eli adjusted.

"Like this?"

"No."

Marcus repositioned him again, precise, efficient.

Behind them—

"…you guys are going to burn out at this rate."

Darius leaned casually against the railing, arms folded, not moving.

"We're behind," Marcus replied.

"Yeah, because you keep rushing everything."

"We're behind because you're not working."

Darius clicked his tongue.

"Or maybe I just don't overdo it."

Eli glanced between them.

Then quietly went back to practicing.

Darius stayed where he was.

Talking.

From across the floor—

Kai noticed.

Of course he did.

Kai's Side

Kai moved through the drill again.

Clean.

Efficient.

Done.

"…you're making the rest of us look bad, you know."

Ren.

Again.

Kai didn't turn.

"You're supposed to struggle at least a little," Ren added.

Kai reset his stance.

"…don't you have somewhere else to be?"

"I do."

"…and?"

Ren shrugged.

"I prefer this."

Kai glanced at him.

Then—

rolled his eyes.

And continued.

Ren stayed.

Work Floor — Later

The room hummed with low activity.

Kai stood at one of the higher terminals.

Again.

Not because he was supposed to.

Because he was needed.

"…we're getting inconsistencies here," one of the senior staff said.

Kai leaned slightly closer to the screen.

"Input order's wrong."

"Where?"

Kai pointed once.

"Here. It loops back incorrectly."

A short pause.

"…that's not—"

The other staff member interrupted.

"…no, he's right."

A beat.

The first one looked at Kai.

Then—

at the display.

"…fix it," he muttered.

Kai didn't react.

Just watched as they corrected it.

Behind him—

Ren leaned against the railing.

Observing.

Quiet for once.

The Shift

Another supervisor stepped in.

Older.

Sharpened expression.

He glanced at the screen.

Then at Kai.

The supervisor stepped closer.

"…he's not a Unit Lead."

Kai didn't respond.

"Operatives don't handle this level of work."

A few heads turned.

The room shifted slightly.

Kai stayed where he was.

"…it was wrong," he said simply.

A pause.

Then—

a quiet scoff.

"So now Operatives are correcting us?"

No one spoke.

Ren pushed off the railing.

"Shouldn't skill matter more than rank?"

The words landed harder than expected.

The supervisor turned to him slowly.

"And you are?"

Ren didn't hesitate.

"His Unit Lead."

A beat.

The supervisor's gaze sharpened.

"Then you should understand why rank exists."

Ren shrugged slightly.

"Yeah."

A small pause.

"Doesn't mean he's wrong."

Silence.

Tension stretched across the space.

The supervisor looked back at the screen.

Then at Kai.

Then back at Ren.

"…finish the task," he said finally.

And walked off.

After

The room settled again.

Not calm.

Just… quieter.

Kai stepped away from the terminal.

Ren followed.

"…you alright?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

They walked in silence for a few steps.

Then—

"…it happens," Kai said.

Ren tilted his head.

"That didn't sound like 'it happens.'"

Kai exhaled lightly.

"They don't care if you're right," he said. "Just where you stand."

Ren watched him.

"…and you still bother?"

Kai gave a small shrug.

"…someone has to fix it."

A pause.

Then—

"…you and Eli are the same," Ren said.

Kai glanced at him.

"How?"

"Both step in," Ren said. "Even when you don't have to."

Kai looked away.

"…it's just work."

Ren didn't push.

For once.

"…for what it's worth," Ren added, "you handled that better than I would've."

Kai let out a quiet breath.

"…you already made it worse."

Ren grinned.

"Yeah, but I made it interesting."

Kai rolled his eyes.

But this time—

there was the slightest pause before he looked away.

Elsewhere

Darius was still talking.

"…I'm just saying, if they actually structured this properly, none of this would even be an issue."

Marcus ignored him.

Eli nodded faintly.

Still working.

Still picking up the slack.

At the far end—

Aiden was already in discussion again.

Cain was not.

Leon passed by.

And just for a moment—

His gaze lingered on Darius.

Then—

moved on.

Unchanged.

End

Kai walked ahead.

Ren followed.

Not because he had to.

Because he wanted to.

"…you know I'm going to keep showing up, right?" Ren said.

Kai didn't respond.

But he didn't tell him to leave.

And this time—

that meant something.
