Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Only Survivor

"HEALER HEALER!!" A tall, plumped man with a long beard wailed at the top of his lungs. "THERE'S SOMEONE ALIVE OVER HERE!!"

As the rubble was being moved off him, all the hunters gather around the body could see severe burns marks all around him and could smell his crispy flesh, they were all experienced hunters but some of them had to step away, trying to stop themselves from vomiting.

"Damn, he has some serious injuries make sure to note that. It will affect how much time he has to serve." The healer placed his hands over the body and a bright green light came shooting out of his hands and into the burnt body.

15 hunters were sent to inspect the town of Poque, no one had expected anyone to survive such an attack."How is it that a boy with no magic was able to survive an attack from a Royal-Class Fire Dragon?"

"There is no way for us to find out until the boy wakes." The healer was a man in his mid 30's with short brown hair and a strong build that couldn't be seen because of his baggy cloak.

"Alright, that's the best I can do. Let us hope he survives the trip back." When the healer was finished, most of the burn marks were gone. The boy's body was put on a wooden stretcher and then placed on a trailer pulled by 2 horses, it was big enough to fit all 15 of the hunter if 2 of them drove the horses. But adding the boy, there wasn't enough room.

"Ok, I suggest a game of Rock, paper scissors the losers have to walk." They all gather in a circle ready to start.

"Err I don't think so, as the leader of this mission I get to sit in the trailer and then you all can get on, in the order of your ranks. The lower ranks have to walk, it will build up your stamina for the future." The plumped man said this with a chuckle.

The journey was a simple one, they had no reason to stop and they all wanted to get home as soon as possible.

"I'll take the boy to the hospital, while the rest of you go and tell the guild master that we have a survivor." The leader then hoisted the boy over his shoulder and walked in the opposite direction to the rest of his team.

Once he entered the hospital a nurse immediately came rushing over to them. "Oh goodness, what is the problem." She had spoken in a calm but concerned voice. She was a woman in her late 50's and was wearing a plain white nurses outfit. He then explained the situation to her and she knew what to do straight away.

"Ok first of all put the poor boy in that bed over there and wheel it into this room." She pointed at a door near the end of the hallway The leader did exactly as she said and without question. The room was 5x5 metres with nothing inside except a glass window. He pushed the bed in the middle of the room and then waited for the nurse.

It wasn't a nurse that walked in but a tired worn-out man wearing a lab coat. He had great big bags under his eyes and his skin was so pale it was like he had never been touched by the sun. He walked in without acknowledging the leader, he was acting like there was no one else alive accept him and the patient. The doctor then sighed and got to work, immediately enveloping the boy in the purest green light that couldn't be stared at unless you didn't want eyes anymore. It was a significant upgrade from the hunter who used the same spell before. He then turned to face the big man who was getting annoyed at the doctor's overall attitude.

"This boy will be perfectly fine, whoever healed him first done an excellent job he will be waking up in the next hour." Before the leader could give a reaction, the doctor had already walked away while yawning.

Sometime after, the boys' eyes started to open slowly he could just barely make out a tall man towering over him, which made him jump and hit the back of his head against the wall.

"Oh, crap that hurt."

"Well that's what you get for freaking out, my face isn't that scary is it," he said while chuckling

"Who are you and where am I?" The boy asked in a concerned voice. "Ok well we'll start with introductions my name is Markael, but call me Mark for short and what's yours?" holding his hand out.

"It's Matthew Haynes." Matthew shook his hand without giving it a second thought.

Mark then went on to explain everything, but through the entire story, Matthews expression never changed. 'Why don't I care about my father's death, the dream of taking over his shop has been destroyed and I just don't care. There must be something wrong with me.' Matthew struggled to understand why he didn't care and why nothing that Mark was saying affected him.

"Listen kid I don't think you understand what this means, you now have to join the guild."

"Wait, What, Why?"

"Because not only did the guild save your life but also healed you from a near-death situation and we are not a charity case, it comes at a price and I highly doubt you can pay it in gold."

"Wait a minute I can't use magic what use will I be?" Matthew was confused why they would want someone like him in a guild.

"Haha don't trouble yourself about it, there is always a way to gain power. There is something I can guarantee you right now, your life will never be the same." Mark said while winking at the puzzled Matthew.
