Chapter 733 - Fourth Arc (Thorns of The Black Throne) - 498. Long Game

Fourth Arc (Thorns of The Black Throne) - 498. Long Game

Once again, the morning came.

Angel woke to pale gold light spilling across the carved ceiling of the guest chamber. The air still carried the faint chill of dawn, cool enough to remind him he was not in Euphorion. Not in the palace that breathed with his own magic. Not in a kingdom that answered to his pulse.

He was alone.

Rose had chosen to sleep in Jane's chamber.

He had agreed.

It was safer that way.

Still, when he sat up, the emptiness beside him pressed in quietly. No warmth lingering on the sheets. No familiar hand brushing against his shoulder. Just silence and the faint distant murmur of castle servants beginning their day.

Angel swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood. The early light traced over his bare torso, outlining muscle and scars earned from battles long past. He moved without vanity, without haste. This body had been tempered by war and discipline, not by indulgence. The only one who ever looked at it was Rose.

And he preferred it that way.

He washed, methodical and precise, cold water cascading over his skin. Cleansed the scent of sleep from his hair. Dressed in simple attire.

Just a foreign nobleman.

He poured himself a small measure of drink, something mild and warm to cut through the chill in his chest. Took one sip. Let it settle.

Then he stepped onto the balcony.

The sunrise was slow here.

The courtyard below stirred with routine. Guards changing shifts. Servants crossing with baskets. A stable boy leading a horse across cobblestone.

Angel leaned against the railing and watched.

Deep in thought.

Leaving Jane here alone had never been a good idea.

But they had no choice.

Darius and Seraphine were playing a long game.

He could feel it.

This was not like King Gervis. Not like Ilex.

Gervis had been blatant in his hostility. Ilex had acted out of personal grudge, thinly veiled behind diplomacy. Angel understood those kinds of enemies. They were loud. Predictable. Impatient.

Darius was none of that.

Darius hid behind pride.

And Seraphine hid behind silence.

Angel's gaze drifted across the courtyard, but his mind was elsewhere.

They could stay here a week.

Maybe a month.

Darius would not act rashly. Not while Euphorion stood strong. Not while Rose's presence complicated any open hostility. Pontus had no formal dispute with Euphorion. No border tension. No trade embargo.

No excuse.

And without excuse, Angel could not move openly.

He exhaled slowly.

Jane.

If things turned ugly…

He might have to make her the reason.

The justification.

The spark.

He disliked the thought immediately.

Using her as bait.

Even if it meant protecting her in the end.

He tightened his jaw.

Before any of that, Roric needed to regain his mind.

That was the true key.

Angel had brushed the wards last night.

The wards belonged to Seraphine. He had recognized the weave. Ancient. Refined. Tied into the castle's foundation and likely to the king's bloodline. So it was connected to the magic room too.

And then…

He had felt something else.

Shadows.

Thin tendrils of awareness crawling through corridors.

Watching.

Testing.

He had sensed them brushing against his chamber walls.

Spying.

He could not use his magic here.

Not openly.

Seraphine would know instantly.

So he had done nothing.

He had simply turned his head slightly toward the corner where the shadows pooled.

And stared.

No aura.

No spell.

Just his eyes.

Cold. Steady. Unafraid.

A warning.

The shadows had lingered a breath too long.

Then retreated.

That had been important.

It proved something.

If he had been the one casting magic, all this acting would have been pointless.

Which meant the disturbance Seraphine sensed did not originate from him. But he knew what she did.

He had allowed the shadows to see that.

Allowed them to report it.

He imagined Seraphine's expression when she heard.

Curious.

Annoyed.

Interested.

Angel rested his forearms on the railing, gaze turning inward again.

Darius needed Seraphine.

That much was obvious.

A king who could not control his own court relied on fear or manipulation.

Or both.

Seraphine was the lever.

She kept Roric obedient.

She kept Jane unstable.

She likely kept certain nobles in quiet submission.

What kind of king needed shadows to enforce his will?
