Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 396. The Queen First Day II
Rose went out of the chamber with her head held high, even if a tiny part of her stomach still twisted in a knot. The long, polished corridor stretched before her, sunlight pooling along the stone floor through the high windows.
Claire followed a step behind, her shoes clicking softly against the stone. Guards posted at intervals along the hall bowed subtly as Rose passed by, and a few passing servants gave quick curtsies. Rose answered them with a small nod each time, keeping her stride even, her face calm.
Inside, she was still adjusting to the way people looked at her now. As a princess, she'd been important. As a queen... she was inevitable.
She'd been trained for this, back in Zephyrus. Lessons on etiquette, diplomacy, how to manage a household, a court, a crisis. She knew the theory of ruling—but Euphorion wasn't Zephyrus. And Angel's kingdom had its own weight, its own pace, and far more complicated history than the kingdom she'd been born into.
The guards outside the council chamber—today, a meeting room set aside for her—bowed and pulled open the heavy oak doors. Rose stepped inside, her heartbeat steady, her face set in serene lines.
Inside, Chancellor Allan was already waiting.
He stood and bowed deeply as she entered. "Your Majesty," he greeted, voice smooth and formal.
"Chancellor Allan," Rose returned with a gentle nod. "Thank you for meeting with me."
Claire slipped into the room behind her and took a discreet position by the door, ready to take notes or fetch documents as needed.
The chancellor gestured toward the table set in the middle of the room, already laid with maps, scrolls, and a neat stack of correspondence. "If you would, Your Majesty," he said, "I thought we could begin with the most pressing matters. I understand this is your first full day stepping into your new duties."
Rose smiled slightly as she sat down. "I'm aware I still have much to learn about Euphorion. I welcome your guidance."
The chancellor gave a slight, approving smile, as if she had passed some invisible test simply by admitting it. "Very well," he said, settling across from her. "I have prepared a list of responsibilities suitable for your first few months."
He slid a piece of parchment toward her. Rose took it, skimming the neat, methodical handwriting.
Public appearances. Ceremonial blessings. Patronage of city projects. Overseeing the education of noble children. Approving certain trade guild charters. It wasn't trivial work by any means, but it was the kind of public-facing, stability-focused role that a queen was expected to fulfill—especially one still new to the kingdom.
"As you can see," the chancellor continued, his fingers steepled together, "for the time being, most military and political matters will remain under His Majesty's direct management. However, affairs of the people, charities, cultural projects, and court ceremonies will gradually shift under your oversight."
Rose nodded, absorbing the weight of the responsibilities. "It makes sense. Euphorion is used to King Angelus' leadership. Sudden changes would be unwise."
The chancellor's smile deepened just a little. "Exactly so, Your Majesty. Your role is crucial in maintaining the image of stability and grace that this court requires."
They moved through the list carefully. Rose asked sharp, precise questions where she needed clarification, not afraid to admit when something was unfamiliar to her. Chancellor Allan answered each one patiently, sometimes pulling out a supplementary scroll or a historical example.
Claire remained silent, taking notes at the side of the room, occasionally exchanging brief glances with Rose—small, silent reassurances that she was doing well.
The morning wore on, but the atmosphere remained steady. Focused.
Then, about halfway through a discussion about the annual festival planning, Chancellor Allan cleared his throat, a slight hesitation in his manner.
"There is one more topic we should... touch upon, Your Majesty," he said carefully.
Rose set her pen down and gave him her full attention.
He hesitated for a beat longer, then pressed forward. "It concerns the matter of succession."
There was a pause, and the way Claire stiffened slightly behind her did not go unnoticed.
Rose's face stayed neutral. "Go on."
Chancellor Allan nodded. "You see, Euphorion has flourished under King Angelus' rule. Stability, prosperity, strength... All hard-won. And while there is no immediate concern..." He gave a small, diplomatic smile. "It would greatly solidify the kingdom's future if there was a clear heir."
