Chapter 2 - THE CALL

The phone kept ringing.

Elias stared at it. The screen said UNKNOWN NUMBER, but in his dream, the older version of himself had already told him what it would say.

_In three days, you will get a call. A job. Kuwait. Don't take it._

It had only been three seconds since he woke up.

His hand was still closed around the key. It was losing its light. The warmth was fading, like a coal cooling. But it was real. He could feel its edges pressing into his palm. Solid light.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice, smooth, professional, with a slight coastal accent. "Am I speaking to Biche? Biche Bruce? The driver?"

"Yes."

"Good. My name is Mr. Omar. I am calling from Al-Khaleej Recruitment, Mombasa Road. We received your details. You have a BCE licence, three years experience. Very good. We have an urgent opening for you. A private company driver in Kuwait. Salary is very good — 300 Kuwaiti Dinar. That's over 120,000 Kenya shillings. Free housing, free ticket. You can fly next week."

Elias's mouth went dry. 120,000 KSH. More than he had ever imagined. Enough to move his mother out of Ruiru, enough to stop worrying.

It was everything he had prayed for for two years.

"Next week?" he whispered.

"Yes. You are lucky. The client cancelled another candidate. But you must come today. Bring your passport and 85,000 shillings for processing and medical. We have an office in Nairobi, you know it?"

Passport. Which he did not have. The lie caught him.

"I... I don't have a passport yet."

A pause. On the other side, the professional voice cracked, just for a second. Annoyance.

"No passport? You applied?"

"No."

"Ah. No problem. We can help you. We have express passport service. Add 25,000. We make it in three days. So total 110,000. Come with cash."

The key in his hand gave a sudden, sharp pulse of heat. A warning.

In the dream, the glass field had cracked from the direction of the city. Black lines eating the future.

Elias looked down at his small room. The leaking roof. The old licence on the table. The dream felt more real than the phone call.

"What is the name of the company in Kuwait?" Elias asked.

Another pause, longer this time.

"Al-Rashid Logistics. Very big company."

"And the address? Can you send me the offer letter?"

Mr. Omar laughed. "You ask many questions for a man who needs a job. Come to the office first. We discuss everything."

The line went dead.

Elias sat in the silence, the rain, the phone buzzing with a new M-Pesa message: _Send 2,000 booking fee to secure your slot..._

He opened his hand. The key was now almost transparent, but it had changed shape. On its head, where there had been nothing, a small symbol had formed.

A tree inside a circle.

The exact emblem from the uniform of the older Elias.

He didn't know what it meant. He didn't know how a dream could leave something in his hand.

But he knew one thing: he was not going to send that 2,000 shillings.

He stood up, slipped the fading key into his pocket, and for the first time in a long time, he didn't feel like a man waiting for life to start.

He felt like a man who had just been attacked by his future — and needed to fight back.

Outside, a matatu hooted. Somewhere, a child laughed. The world was normal.

Except in the corner of his eye, just for a second, the wall of his room looked like glass.
