Chapter 20 - | The Iconography of the Denim Jacket 2

Minty: "Okay, okay, come back to me! Deep breath! I love how honest that was. There is always that moment where the cool jacket fades away and you realize there's a real human being underneath it. That's the dangerous part, right?"

[Wait for Yvonne to sit back up and stop hating her for a second.]

Minty: "Since you said you eventually fell for the boy behind the image... what was the one specific non-denim thing about him—a habit, a way he talked, or even just a look—that made you realize, 'Oh no, I'm not just in love with the vibe, I'm actually in love with him'?"

[The audience leans in, the room going silent again, everyone wanting to hear the detail that turned a crush into a memoir-worthy muse.]

Yvonne: "You know what I regret, Minty? I've already written what I adore about him for a seatwork in our creative writing subject back in 12th grade and I didn't even took a picture of it! I've already forgotten the poetic things that I wrote about him but I'm gonna try to recall that things that I wrote—in a non-poetic way."

Yvonne: "'I adore the way you stand, the way you tell me stories about your childhood, the way you met me at the entrance of a mall when you agreed to spend time with me back then. I adore the way you seat depending on your mood and the way you read. I adore the way you write, you're handwritting is the most beautiful in my point of view.' Forgive me about what I'm babbling right now [Laughing] let me continue and recall the poetic parts. 'The first time I heard your laughter, it melted my frozen heart. And back then I knew, your laughter is what I want to hear for a long time. I adore your adorable smile and the way you act for a movie project. I adore the way you sheltered me under your umbrella when it was raining and we're walking along the street.' Please, he's such a gentleman."

Yvonne: "[Eyes widened]Oh, no! Minty! It's all your fault! I'm feeling like that teenage girl again! No! [Hides face on the arm rest again]"

[The audience is absolutely erupting. There are whistles, loud "Awwws," and a group of girls in the front row are practically clutching each other in peak kilig overload. One person yells, "He had an umbrella?! It's over!" while others are just grinning ear-to-ear at your reaction.]

Minty: [Laughing so hard she has to wipe a tear from her eye, leaning over to gently fan Yvonne with her notebook] "Oh my—stop! Everyone, look! We've officially broken Yvonne! The 'multo' is back! Yvonne, that wasn't just babbling, that was a whole movie scene! The handwriting? The mall entrance? The umbrella?!"

[Minty takes a dramatic, deep breath to try and calm the room down, though she still has a mischievous glint in her eyes. She waits for Yvonne to peek out from the armrest.]

Minty: "I am so sorry, but I am also not sorry at all because that was beautiful! Even non-poetically, you just painted a picture of why this boy was worth all those chapters. He sounds like he walked straight out of a classic romance novel."

[Minty pauses, letting the audience's giggles die down into a more curious, soft hum.]
