Bertha Swift didn't expect Adam Piers to say such things in broad daylight. She was choked and coughed even harder. At that moment, a hand gently patted her back, and the soft laughter above carried a teasing, mischievous tone that inexplicably tickled her ears.
Once Bertha Swift caught her breath, she chided the man without any courtesy, "Not serious."
"I haven't been serious for a day or two. Don't you like it?" Adam Piers enjoyed seeing the little woman caught off guard. Even as he asked, the corners of his lips were curved upward.
Bertha Swift, unwilling to engage, turned her head and went upstairs. Most of the crew had left; she should be leaving too.
