Chapter 17 - Treasured Traumatizing Memories (L)

Lukas started visualising his past once again as if it was happening at that very moment... he remembered that when the light faded, he found himself on top of a hill that was right next to the destroyed city... he had looked all around the outside of the city, and he had not seen a single hill at all but he did see a forest... which only made the situation seem even more strange considering the fact that he did not see a single tree at this moment. Lukas looked around as he was confused as to what was happening... before he looked down the hill to see the three cloaked figures and Cole still stood there... the strange female seemed to be looking around to try and work out what had happened. Almost immediately after Lukas saw the strangers, he dropped down into the grass in an attempt to not be seen. The femal estranger walked over to Cole after a moment of looking around and raised her staff again. "Hello? Can I help you?" A voice asked from behind Lukas.

Lukas practically jumped when he heard the voice and he turned around to see a girl about his age wearing a green jacket, a white shirt and brown trousers. "I'm sorry... did I scare you?" The girl asked. "I... I don't know. Cole is... wait... Cole." Lukas responded as he turned back to the city to see that all of the figures and Cole had disappeared. "What are you looking at? Is it really that interesting?" The girl inquired as she walked over to Lukas and looked down the hill and saw the city. "Wait... what. What... happened here?" The girl questioned Lukas as she gasped when she saw the city. "I don't know... it all happened so fast... we were running from it and then... they were all gone. Oh god... they're all gone." Lukas replied. "What? What did this? Tell me now!" The girl demanded as she seemed understandably upset. "I think it was... some sort of god." Lukas explained as he still hadn't fully grasped the situation. "Gods... they're not... just made up? My father believed in multiple and he said that one was more powerful than the rest but... there has to be a more rational explanation to what's happening." The girl stated as she was in disbelief of her own words.

"What else could have caused this? What mortal being would be able to cause this much damage in such a short time?" Lukas asked. "I don't know... it could've been a coordinated terrorist attack for all I know! Gods don't exist... they... don't exist... do they?" The girl was forced to question her own beliefs at that moment. What am I going to do? Cole was the only one who knew anything about survival that I knew... and now he's gone." Lukas realised as he was thinking out loud. The girl somehow seemed to be happy despite her being in shock just moments earlier. "How can you find joy in this?" Lukas questioned as he was nearly in tears. "Are you kidding? I hated where I lived... I just wanted to thank whoever did this... that's why I was asking." The girl answered. Lukas just remained silent as the girl was laughing about what had happened... Lukas found it irritating before he heard someone calling out to him. "Lukas! Lukas where are you?" The voice yelled. "Cole? Is that you?" Lukas shouted back after a moment of silence. "Hey... where are you going? We've got to stick together if we have no where to go! Power in numbers and all that." The girl explained as Lukas started running towards the voice.

"Cole! Is that you?" Lukas shouted. "Lukas? Oh thank god you're alive." Cole yelled back as he saw Lukas approaching him. Lukas ran up to Cole and hugged him without saying another word and stayed there for a few seconds. "I thought you were dead." Lukas explained through his tears. "I promised you that we'd both make it out alive didn't I?" Cole asked rhetorically. "Hey... so... what's going on here?" The girl inquired when she caught up to Lukas. "Oh right... sorry. Cole this is... actually she never told me her name." Lukas told Cole. "The name's Chara. Pleasure to meet you Cole and uh... Lukas was it?" The girl explained. "Yes, that is correct." Cole replied. "So Lukas I know that I was happy that the city got destroyed at first but... I've only just realised now that I have no where to go. Do you mind if I stayed with you?" Chara asked. "Fine by me." Cole spoke rather quickly. "Um... sure." Lukas replied as he was rather surprised at how quickly Cole agreed.

"Well... where are we going?" Chara asked. "Didn't you say something about going to a different town Cole?" Lukas suggested. "We're not going there anymore." Cole stated a she pointed over into the distance. Lukas stared at the area that was a few miles down the hill to see a mass of red flames and black smoke... the Great Calamity was already well ahead of them. "Let me change my question then. Where can we go where we'll be safe?" Chara requested as she was starting to question Cole's plan. "We can't go anywhere without being followed... Lukas you do remember that goddess that you found out about that you found really interesting?" Cole asked. "You mean the Great Calamity? I had a feeling that she did this... that woman in the cloak kind of gave off the same feeling as reading about her... and their abilities do seem similar." Lukas replied. "Now tell me... in the book that you read... what did it say about where she could see." Cole continued. "Let me see if I can remember... "On the sea, on land or in the sky... no where is safe from her wrath." That's the quote that I can remember... it's funny... I remember thinking to myself when I read it "No where is safe? You didn't even mention the few kingdoms that are under the oceans that she hasn't found... or the fact that she hasn't found any underground kingdoms." Lukas remembered.

"Exactly Lukas! We'll hide underground. Build a bunker right here and she won't be able to find us." Cole excitedly replied. "How can you be so excited about this?" Chara asked as she found Cole's expressions to be inappropriate for the situation. "Sorry... I just wanted to put all of my skills that I've acquired over the years to good use. I'll be needing both of you to help out though okay?" Cole explained. "Alright... what do we need to do?" Lukas questioned. "You need to follow me." Chara replied as she started walking back towards the destroyed city. "Why... would we go that way?" Cole inquired. "'Cause if we do... then we don't have to put in much hard work." Chara reassured Cole. Lukas shrugged at Cole as he started following Chara.

"Where exactly are we going?" Cole asked as he seemed irritated. Chara held up her hand as if telling Lukas and Cole to stop before she seemed to start counting the buildings... or rather what remained of the buildings. "This one!" Chara yelled as she started running towards a building that had very little remaining of it. "Help me out will you?" Chara requested as she started trying to pull some rubble off of a very specific part of the floor. Lukas and Cole helped her pull the pieces aside before they found a trap door that seemed to be locked. Chara loudly knocked on the door. "Open up! It's Chara... I survived the whole Calamity... are you really going to ignore me? I will break into here if you don't open it... if I get in there then you'll be sorry! Hey could you break it open for me?" Chara yelled as she continued hitting the door with increasing force. "Sure... no problem." Lukas replied as he began kicking the door until it eventually burst open. "Could you wait for one second? I'll try and sort this out." Chara requested as she jumped through the opening in the floor. "Wait... what did you tell me about power in numbers?" Lukas asked as he jumped down with Chara. "You two! Get out of there! We have no idea who is down there!" Cole said to try and reason with them. "Oh I have a pretty good idea of who is down here." Chara explained as she pulled out a knife from her jacket. "Where were you keeping that?" Lukas asked in shock.

"Come out! I seriously doubt that nobody would use this bunker considering that pretty much all of us knew about it!" Chara shouted whilst ignoring Lukas' question. Chara walked towards a few rooms and looked inside before shaking her head and turning back to Lukas. "It's empty. Nobody is here." Chara stated as she walked towards a room just behind where Lukas had dropped down into the bunker. "How did these people make this place look so nice in such a short time?" Lukas asked as he looked around at all of the expensive furniture. "They were expecting this to happen for years... but it seems that the Great Calamity knew about this too as this building seemed to be her first target when she came here... she was so fast at attacking that nobody managed to get inside in time." Chara explained. "Where are you going now?" Lukas inquired as Chara opened a door and walked through it without a second thought. "To my room... I suppose I didn't mention it but my father was the one who ordered the construction of this place. He made a room specifically for me... although I seemed to be the least important thing to him so I wouldn't be surprised if my room is a mess compared to the others." Chara answered. "Alright then. Cole! You should come down here and see this place! The decoration is just amazing! Lukas yelled at the trap door he entered through. Lukas waited for what seemed like almost a minute and he hadn't heard Cole reply... he hadn't even heard him move. "Cole? Is everything alright?" Lukas asked as he looked through the hole in the ceiling... he was given no response however.

Lukas noticed a ladder neatly tucked away in the corner and so he placed it beneath the trap door and climbed up to see what was wrong with Cole. When he had reached the top, Lukas found no trace of Cole. "Chara? Do you know where Cole went?" Lukas asked when he climbed back down the ladder. "Huh? What about Cole?" Chara answered with another question as she peeked outside of her room. "He's gone! Do you know where he is?" Lukas asked desperately. "Well... yeah he did say he was going out hunting once we got here... we did both agree that we were fine with him doing that for a couple of hours." Chara replied. "What? Since when did he say tha-." Lukas was saying before he stopped himself all of a sudden. "Is everything alright Lukas?" Chara questioned Lukas as she was kind of worried for him. "Nothing... it's fine... for some reason I just forgot about that. I'm panicking over the simplest things." Lukas explained. "I get how you feel. Just sit down... I'll try and help you calm down." Chara suggested as she came out of her room.

"Hang on one second... what happened there?" Beth asked as she broke Lukas' focus. "What? What do you mean?" Lukas wondered. "I'm talking about the fact that you freaked out about Cole being gone and then, all of a sudden, you remembered Cole saying something about going hunting which he didn't actually say... and not only that but Chara also said that she heard Cole say that as well even though I was listening to your thoughts and he very clearly did not say a thing about that! It doesn't make sense! Not only that... but your story has completely changed as well! You said that you built your underground home... you didn't say that Chara took you to it!" Beth exclaimed. "What do you mean? I said in my memory that I forgot about him saying that... and I forgot again until now when I was remembering what happened back then." Lukas explained. "Okay then... carry on... this is rather interesting." Beth said as she quietened her voice for the last part of her sentence... Lukas still heard her though but he pretended that he didn't as he didn't want to get side-tracked.

Lukas went back to remembering his past with Chara... how they both sat down next to each other as Chara tried to calm him down. "Is there anything that you need to get off of your mind?" Chara asked. "There is a lot actually... I've only just started thinking about what has happened... how the city is gone... how my parents are... dead. I keep trying to hold onto this sliver of hope that nothing is as bad as it seems to be... but I know deep down that everything right now is just as simple as either being alive or dead... if you're not one... then you're the other." Lukas responded. "Isn't that how it always is though? You probably never realised it until now but... everything was always like that... it's just that your hope was so much higher than now to the point where it kept you from seeing the truth... hey that's a positive isn't it? You're not blinded by your hope anymore... you can accept reality for what it is and move on." Chara explained to try and cheer Lukas up. "I don't know if that's a good thing or not... but I'll try and see the positives for as long as possible... so I'll take it as a good thing." Lukas answered as he tried to hold in his tears. "If you're anything like me, then you need to take this slow... try and take your mind off of everything negative for as long as possible before focusing on the negative parts again for a short amount of time... also... you probably feel that it might be embarrassing for you to cry in front of other people... it's not... I went through some... things... and those things taught me that I shouldn't be afraid to show how I feel in front of others because if I do then others might want to support me more... just like how I'll support you so you don't go through anything worse than what I went through." Chara suggested.

Lukas couldn't contain it anymore... he burst out into tears... somehow Chara showing that she knew what he was going through had only made things worse. Chara didn't speak another word... she simply put her arm around Lukas to show that she knew what he was going through... but she didn't once show any signs other than that... not a single tear or even a change in expression... but for some reason, Lukas found this to be more reassuring than any of her words. After a while of Chara consoling Lukas, she finally spoke up again. "It is sometimes better for you to be alone to think though... I'll leave this here... Cole did say that you were interested in gods right? Well you might find this interesting then." Chara explained as she got up and put a book down on her seat. "What is it?" Lukas asked as he wiped away his tears. "It was my fathers... he was rather interested in a few gods in particular but when he got this book, he became absolutely obsessed with one of them... I think the book shows all of the gods throughout history. You can use either of the two rooms over there... I'm sure Cole wouldn't mind you picking first." Chara offered Lukas as she gestured towards two doors on the other side of the room. Lukas nodded and simply walked into the room that was closest to him, sat down on the bed he found inside and opened the book and looked through the pages quickly just to try and get his mind off of everything that had happened recently... he came across one page that the owner of the book seemed to have written over. The name of the god was still visible on the page through all of the writing, it read "Cthulhu the Ancient God of Destruction" but the writing underneath it had given it a new title that being "The True God that Rules over Everything". "Of all the gods that you could choose to worship... you chose one that was horrifically killed in one of the most brutal ways possible." Lukas thought to himself as he stared at the page and remembered the stories he had read about Cthulhu's death... and as he looked down at the words, he found that this book had the exact same story written inside of it along with some descriptive writing about the beast itself.

"Cthulhu Status: Deceased

Cthulhu is a Primordial God that is believed to have drained celestial objects and god-like beings of their powers leading to it gaining immense strength. Little is known about this being other than it's general appearance being that of a giant humanoid entity with it's body glowing light blue and tentacles covering most of it's face. The power limit of this entity is unknown as if it did demonstrate it's full potential, it would most likely destroy almost everything in reality to the point where it would be near impossible to document it's absolute potential. The Tyrant King has made it clear that Cthulhu has been slain by one of his soldiers and that one of Cthulhu's closest followers had even documented what they saw take place. The follower claims to have seen the Tyrant King's soldier arrive in whatever dimension that Cthulhu was residing in... before the soldier asked the monster for a favour... but when Cthulhu refused, the soldier attacked and managed to cleave the opponent's body in two with one attack. Cthulhu then complied with the soldier and so they left... but years later, they returned and claimed that they were sorry about what they were going to do... and in the blink of an eye, the god that was worshipped by anyone who had laid eyes on it was killed by the stranger. Most of the followers of Cthulhu then decided to worship the soldier as a god in the hopes that doing so would save their lives... this soldier is now considered a god by one and all and they have even been given a name since they did not tell anyone their actual name. The beings new name is..." The book read until the last sentences were scribbled over and writing had been added underneath that said "Don't say her name or she will come for you." Lukas immediately knew what god had killed Cthulhu as their was only one god that he knew that he could not say the name of unless he wanted to doom himself and everything around him... in fact, he hadn't been told the god's name... he had only been told what to call it instead of it's actual name... "The Great Calamity".

"The Great... Calamity." Lukas thought to himself. "Is something wrong Lukas?" Beth asked. "That name... it brings back so many memories." Lukas spoke out loud. "Well... isn't that the point of why we're here? We are trying to get you to remember so that you can-" Beth was saying before she got cut off. "I hate this. No... I despise this." Lukas whispered to himself whilst ignoring Beth. "I'm sorry? I didn't quite catch that." Beth explained as she came closer to Lukas. "I said that I hate this! All of it! I hate you, I hate that you're making me live through my memories again, I hate all these worlds! I just want her to come back! I just want to see her again! If I can't have that then I just want the power to end it all... to end everything!" Lukas yelled as tears started streaming down his face. Suddenly, Lukas felt something... like a great feeling of accomplishment from deep inside of him... it was like some deep part of him that he had long forgotten had finally reawakened... like he could finally continue with his life and be proud of what he had done from this point onwards. Lukas clenched his hands into fists as if he was still angry at Bethany but... instead his hands wrapped around something by his sides... something cold and hard that almost felt like metal. All he heard from Beth was her laughing... but not like she was making fun of him... almost as if something unexpected had happened and she couldn't be any happier for it. "Well done Lukas! I honestly thought that you didn't have what it takes... but I guess you proved me wrong." Beth congratulated Lukas. Lukas just looked at Beth with a confused expression but she just simply pointed down at his hands... and when he looked down, he couldn't believe what he saw, two bladed weapons that looked like they were made out of some sort of red crystal had materialized in his hands.

"Hey! Clysm! You've got to see this!" "What? What can be so interesting to the point where you need me to see this?" "Lukas has summoned his weapons! Isn't this great? We'll finally be free soon!" "You seriously think that just because his weapons are different that this time it will work? I won't care until we see Fear and Light join him... and I don't know about you but I haven't seen anyone here who could represent either of those things." "Well that just shows how impatient you are... they could literally show up at any moment and here you are saying that Lukas isn't the one simply because Fear and Light aren't here right this second." "Fine... I guess I can wait for freedom that might never come so I know that there's a possibility of being trapped in this forever." "Well we've definitely had enough time to get used to it. I just hope that this time it pays off... I'm pretty sure that she's hoping for the same thing." "Bethany will get us through this... after all she is "Better than us in everyway!"" "You're still thinking about that? Hearing that didn't make me feel any different because I knew it was the truth." "Well you don't care about your pride... whatever... we need to work together on this... I'll try and be nice about it."
