Chapter 2 - Thin veils

-Open up you whore, I know you're in there! Don't make me lose my temper, threatened a man's voice with an impatient tone.

-Oh shit...This ain't good; she whispered with a shocked expression on her face after peeking through the keyhole a second time.

Her reaction definitely proved that something went wrong last night as the unwelcome guest was no one other than the owner of the club and her employer.

What could she have possibly done wrong? Was the VIP not satisfied with her performance? Did she do or say anything so fucked up that she ended up provoking this whole fiasco? Magdalena grew anxious while the banging was more aggressive by the second. She quietly started rewinding and rummaging through her memory in dread, attempting to figure out what caused this... after a few moments she finally came to realize what she did last night. She stepped back and ran towards her bed to confirm her worst fear... She carefully brushed out of the way the hair strands that covered Runa's face then analyzed her features, then she proceeded to browse through her phone, desperately looking for a picture.

-Fuck, fuck, fuck! Why did it have to be you of all people?! Wake up! she mumbled while trying to put on pair of pants then slapped Runa's cheek.

-Give me 5 more minutes... groaned Runa confused while turning on the other side.

-We don't have 5 minutes! Rumaine is looking for you! she urged her in desperation.

-What?! Dammit! she jolted in fear.

- That's right, now put on your clothes and get your ass out of here or we're both dead! Hurry; yelled Magdalena quietly after pushing her off the bed.

The girl dragged Runa towards her kitchen and urged her to jump out the window with a hand gesture.

-Wait... stopped Runa before finally jumping.

-What is it this time? she questioned her in confusion.

-Meet me later tonight at the bar and you won't regret it; she said after stealing a kiss from Magdalena then carefully landed barefoot on the ground.

-Just go already; she sighed with frustration in her eyes after rubbing her hands against her face.

The redhead stared as Runa was vanishing in the distance, the only thing left in sight were her footprints sunk into the dewy grass.

She snapped out of it as this was not the moment to ponder on pictorial sceneries; it was a life threatening situation. Magdalena turned towards the door and ruffled her hair then proceeded to inhale deeply. She finally found the courage to unlock the door that almost got shredded to small chunks of what would seem to be wood.

-Boss, what brings you here at this hour? Is there an emergency; she yawned while trying to put up an act.

-Where is she? I know she's here; he yelled in anger while forcing his way in.

-Who are you referring to, boss? There's no one here beside myself, she informed him with a confused tone.

-You know who I'm talking about! She left with you last night, my runts saw you two together. She must be here still; he reprimanded the girl with conviction.

-Oh, you mean the girl you sent on the stage mid-show? Yes she came by and we had a glass or two, you know, having a girls night, but she left shortly after saying she has to get back home to her lover; she claimed innocently.

-You idiot that's my wife, Runa! She never came back home after that; he fumed while marching around Magdalena's room looking through her stuff aimlessly.

-What? I had no idea; she mumbled in shock.

-If she's nowhere to be found you'll be the one responsible for it. I'll make you crawl through hell and back if I'm proved otherwise. I'm sure your family would be more than delighted to find out where their lovely daughter spent the past 2 years; he pointed out while turning his back.

-You have my word, this is the truth. I was unaware that she was your wife as she never said a word about it. We chatted for a bit about the performance and some other things but she said she got bored and that she'll go home to get some rest. This is what happened; she spoke in a soft tone that was oddly contradicting due to her terrified look on her face and gestures.

-I swear to the one above, if I find out that you lied, you're dead meat. Also clean this filthy room, it reeks in here; he threatened once more in a serious tone after taking a glance at the messy floor, then he closed the door.

After the door closed her expression changed progressively accentuating her fright.

The woman stood there frozen for a short time then rushed to the bathroom, she grabbed some cleaning products and started to tidy up her place. After a few good hours of stress cleaning and attempting to organize what seemed like a tsunami of thoughts and questions she stopped.

She simply gnarled in frustration as she crouched on the cold, no-longer-ashy floor. Guilt started to kick in as she sunk her head under her arms. Her sinful acts from last night slowly turned into chains and trapped her in this hellish position. All sorts of thoughts were rampaging through her mind: Will Runa rat her out to save her skin? Will she have to face the consequences of her actions and return back to her family? Will Rumaine find a more suitable punishment for seducing his crazy mistress?

All of these possibilities were so unpredictable and ultimately, only Magdalena would be suffering in each one of them as the contract she signed with her employer completely forbade her from having any sort of unprofessional kind of relationship with any of the employees, especially Runa. Unfortunately this policy was something she foolishly dismissed last night and now she is on the verge of losing her very life.

She reached in her left pocket for a lighter then crawled towards the kitchen. She sighed at the sight of the half smoked cigarette that was left in the ashtray and gently picked it up. The silence grew and the smoke embraced the whole chamber. She gazed at the sun through her large window and contemplated her life choices; she seemed somewhat lost. Her reddish skin had a slight golden tone due to the sun rays and her eyes expressed nothing but emptiness.

-That bitch surely knows how to get on my nerves. And what did he mean by filthy? Imean sure, this place wasn't very tidy for the past week since I worked my ass off every fucking day to bring him clientele. Ungrateful bastard...The silence slipped through again but lasted far less as it was disturbed by her voice once more.

-I'm such an idiot; she mumbled in a disappointed manner as she got up then leaned slightly, picking up the cigarette buds scattered across the windowsill.

Magdalena rushed out of her lodging with an exhausted look in her eyes, she was ready to own her mistakes and face the consequences. She slowly headed towards the spot that Runa mentioned.

As she walked, step by step she started to recall memories of her twisted past, each one of those made her skin crawl and her stomach turn. She suddenly fastened her pace after switching direction. Her uneasyness was overflowing right this moment and because of it, she took a small detour through the district to prepare herself mentally and blow off some steam.

-Hiiii gorgeous, I wasn't expecting you to have a day off today; squealed a woman in excitement.

-Me neither, I wasn't expecting to run into you today; smiled Magdalena sarcastically.

-What are the odds, you said you would get a drink with me on your next day off. You haven't forgotten, have you; teased the woman further as she slowly tried to cling onto Magdalena.

- I actually have a few things ot resolve today. I don't really have time for any outings.

-And why should I believe you?

-Who in their right mind would lie to a face as pretty as yours; she reasoned while gently grabbing her hand and kissing it.

The womans cheeks suddenly flushed upon hearing those honeyed words.

-Just promise me next time you'll go out with me. I really miss your warmth; she confessed while fixing her gaze upon Magdalena's now distant hand.

-Listen, I would love to have a drink the next time. You're a very beautiful and smart lady but I trully do not hold you in the same regards as you would like me to; she refused with a cold tone then darted out of her sight.

After running around through the dangerously lonely alleys and well shaded areas she slowed down and slipped through the ruins. Nothing felt better than punching a sack of cold, wet sand at this moment. She had built her own small hideout where she can trully express her frustration and let go of her troubles. Only God knows when she stumbled upon this abandoned building. It seemed to have been a beer factory that closed down years ago.

One hour passes by as she kept agresivelly throwing precise punches and side kicks she decides that she is craving her favorite drink. To drown her sorrows and disgust into a refreshing serving of pure alcohol with a fruity aftertaste; that would've been the best way to soothe the ache caused by that mad woman.

-A glass of sour cherry bomb please.

-You're late. I was assuming you would show up earlier today; commented a confident feminine voice.

-Something came up; replied Magdalena with contempt.

-Well at least you showed up. That means I still piqued your curiosity enough, responded the woman playfully as she licked the cream off from the rim of the glass.

-Listen, I didn't come here for anything; she voiced as someone interrupted her.

-Who said she's here to play with a tramp like you? Scram if you value that pretty body of yours; intervened a familiar voice.

The woman that initially approached Magdalena refused to say a word then quietly walked away, averting eye contact.

- So you decided to come to me, darling. I'm glad to see that you're in one piece still; she approached her with confidence.

- I came here because I wanted to know the reason why you would go as far as hiding who you actually are just for some action. I didn't think you were that desperate; sighed Magdalena while avoiding eye contact still.

- Just for that? I'm truly hurt to hear those words. I was thinking that there would be much more to it after the things that we've done last night; she speculated again while trying to carress her back gently with her sharp red nails.

-You really think that I have a crush on you or something? As you've seen and heard so far I got quite a reputation for one night stands; she smilled as she chugged down the half of her drink.

- People can change... you know; she reassured calmly.

- All you've been doing from the moment you set foot in this place was put everyone's safety at risk only to have "fun"? I know about your cult-like group where you've done unspeakable things to anyone who even looks att you the wrong way.

-I don't know what you mean by those horrible accusations; she dismissed her words and tried to get closer.

-This is why I denied your requests to meet up 6 months ago as well without knowing who you are truly and what you look like; she shook her hand off of her back and gulped the whole glass to the last drop .

-I've admired your dedication and professionalism from the start. It's true that my pride was hurt when you refused to meet with me back then, but I never attempted to hurt anyone. I did not plan out to go this far either but I'm ready to take responsibility for my behavior due to my profound feelings; she confessed while grabbing her hands gently.

-Oh, so you didn't think twice before cheating on that bastard with the most hated employee there was in this whole damn club? How kind of you to fuck up my entire existence, I'm beyond grateful; she glared as she continued in a spiteful tone.

- I just wanted to have some fun with you. It's not like he would kill you either way, he doesn't have any proof; she said while dismissing any sort of ownership.

- You've had your fun, now it's time to let me go. I'm not willing to risk my life for someone so fucking self absorbed. You're not even that

- If my affection for you is trivial then I don't know what to think anymore. I was even willing to go as far as to ask Rumaine to give you a raise and take on the whole blame if you were willing to remain my assistant at least.

-Do you really think you can coerce me into believing your half-assed nothings with some cash and your so called feelings for me. Don't make me laugh, you really thought that a relatively decent make out session would make me fall for your bullshit? Like hell I'll become your little pet; she remarked angrily as she slowly walked past her.

The woman pursed her lips, turned around and sat down without saying a word after Magdalena took her leave. Until today no one ever said such things to her, she was shook yet filled with satisfaction for some reason.

-I knew she would be a fun toy, she'll keep me entertained for a while. You there, I'd like a bloody mary and some pinneapple. Make sure it's evenly sliced and fresh; she giggled while looking at some videos.

-Right away miss; assured the bartender.
