Walker could just start doing more to improve the lives of the white stage race. However, he didn't want to make it seem like he was taking over. He did not wish to become a new leader for them and interfere in their lives too dramatically. Especially to the point where their current leader may lose the faith of her people.
"You have shown us quite a bit and we have nothing to give you in return." This would be the normal reaction proving that the leader of the white stag village was actually considering the fact that Walker and his party were looking for equal payment.
They had spent their items and mana to ensure that her people were safe and prepared. Meaning that the relationship they wanted should be asking for things as well other than just giving. That was a simple understanding within any alliance overall.
