Chapter 339 - Team friction (2)

Just how are we supposed to quickly clear this dungeon if those two keep going at each others throats?

"Can someone fill me in on what's happened? Like, I was only gone for like a minute and those two seem look angry."

I'm about to tell Peter what happened when Maribelle breaks away from her staring contest with Pascal and shouts at Peter.

"You want to know what happened? This arrogant **** thinks she's too good for everyone here. She doesn't need to respect the professions of others because they are beneath her notice. She's so special and yet she can't even make a simply ******* choice!"

That's a lot of resentment. And Pascal appears to be genuinely shocked at Maribelle's outburst.

"I didn't say anything like that…"

"You didn't? Didn't you just say that you don't need to know the difference between psychics and prophets? And why? Just because you don't want to be one! You made fun of Guy for being a goblin too, were angry at him for getting a strong evolution! What else was that about?!!"

"I didn't mean it that way! I just wanted to get a path laid out for me by my stupid luck too!"

"You have no idea what it's like to have your path dictated by someone else! You think that's fun?!!! You want to be a slave? Want to have your life dictated by someone else?"

Maribelle is getting really worked up, I should-

"So what if I do? Why do you get to judge me for that?"

"Because your the ****** lucky one! You get to choose! I never did. I still don't! Every damn evolution I get that accursed skill back and no matter how many times I sacrifice it, it keeps reappearing! I don't care what I become as long as it's not a damn prophet!"

"And why is that my problem? I am not allowed be jealous of Guy but you can be jealous of me?"

"I didn't start this by lashing out at other people for no reason!"

"But you did but into someone else's problem, didn't you? I don't remember lashing out at you and Guy's old enough to defend himself."

This is going nowhere. Navi, can you talk to them?

Let me guess. When all those things about seriously doing their jobs was being said, you were the one to talk them down, repeatedly, until they both got way too angry.

Looks like I'll have to break this up. I feel like I have to stop a fight between my daughters again. Though Quinn can be a whole lot scarier than these two if she gets triggered hard enough.

"Enough, both of you! It doesn't matter who started what, we're all adults here so act like it. We have a job to do and with you two constantly getting into arguments we aren't getting anywhere.

"Maribelle, I understand your frustrations at being forced onto a path you don't want to walk but the fact that you can sacrifice that skill you hate so much without getting it back means you have already started deviating from that path which you should be happy about.

"Pascal, I won't pretend to understand your struggles with finding a calling but let me ask you this. What disqualifies you job at VR dungeons from being the path you wish to take. Because it looks to me like you've already got a career lined up for you. And surely the people you usually work with aren't that bad, right?"

"Well yes but…"

"But?"

"It's not a real job is it? I'm just teaching newbies how to punch."

"And do you dislike that?"

"No- but…"

"But?"

I feel like we're getting somewhere.

"It's nothing special! My parents always said that when you find your calling it's going to be special! That I would be doing something great!"

"So helping newbies learn how to punch isn't special enough? You were jealous of me and all I really do is help newbies learn stuff they didn't know yet."

"Yeah, but you always get praised for it! Everyone keeps going on about how special you are!"

"You might not believe me but I've never tried to be special and I think that's the secret to my success. I've just kept doing what I do and it seems I have become quite good at it. Others may think I'm special but to me I just do what I can to feed and protect my family. That's my calling and I didn't find it by looking for it. I kept doing what I could and ended up with it.

"Now don't let me tell you how to live your life or that you have to be content with the life you have. But I think you might find that the things you already have are plenty special if you are just willing to look for it."

Damn that sounded cheesy.

Who knows. As I I just said, I do what I can and that's about it. Maybe my instructing skill makes it easier for me to influence people but that's really all I can think of.

Please don't start saying I'm special.

"Sorry to interrupt again, but are you guys done having your moment. Because I just went to check on the ambush again and those things are starting to get a little bit antsy. I don't think they'll wait for much longer. Soooo…"

"Peter…"

"Yes?"

"…Thanks for checking."

Peter really knows how to spoil the mood but I can't bring myself to reprimand him. We are in a dungeon and this whole thing could have gotten us killed under normal circumstances. He should be saying something but he just has impeccably bad timing.
