Chapter 21 - Houdini

Akio Hisashi:

"Nemo," I shout. Looking up, I see a big bag filled with rocks falling toward Nemo. "Watch out!"

Despite my warning, Nemo isn't moving. The bag is getting closer and closer to him, and yet, he still isn't moving.

"Nemo," I shout, flying toward him. As I fly to him, I feel something happening. My whole body is burning, and I feel heavy, yet despite feeling heavy, I also feel very energized.

"Nemo," I shout again, flying and disappearing into Nemo's body. Opening his eyes, I look up and see the falling bag. Jumping and backflipping out of the way, I watch as the bag hits the floor. The thud it makes when it hits the floor echoes in my ears. Or Nemo's ears.

"Ahh," I cry. Something forces me out of Nemo's body, and now, I am hovering by his side.

"Ahhh," Nemo cries out. As he cries out, he holds his stomach. "Akio. Did you just possess me?"

"I think I just did," I answer, looking at my hands.

"I didn't know you could do that."

"Neither did I."

Surprised by my new, sudden abilities, I keep looking down at my hands until I hear Nemo screaming again.

"What!"

Looking at Nemo, I see the girl thief with orange hair. Running out of the room, she stops when she sees Nemo standing.

"You're not unconscious," the thief yells.

Nemo looks at me before turning back to the girl.

"Uhh, no," he starts, "I am not. I am not unconscious!"

"Why are you shouting," I ask. "The thief is right there, and I think she can hear you just fine."

"I have no idea," Nemo whispers, turning to me before turning back to the thief.

"Give up the glass flowers," Nemo orders, pointing at the girl thief. "Or else."

"Or else what," the girl thief asks. She places her hand on her shoulder bag.

"The flowers must be in there," I think.

"Or else what," Nemo repeats. "Uhh. Or else..."

"Or else you'll have to deal with me," Emica says, landing beside Nemo.

Nemo Farid:

"Or else you'll have to deal with us," I say, smiling and turning my head. Looking at Emica, I realize she's still covered in white paint. "Uhh."

"I know," Emica whispers, nodding.

Pulling out her chigiriki, Emica starts making circles with it. Together, Emica and I step toward the girl. As we step toward her, the girl sighs.

"Fine," she says, lowering her head. "You win."

The girl takes off her shoulder bag and holds it out.

"What," I say. I look at Emica. She must be confused, too, because she is looking back at me. I turn back to the girl as she shakes her hand.

"You win," the girl repeats. "The glass flowers are all yours. Take them."

She shakes her bag again, and I can hear the glass flowers bouncing up and down.

"Don't worry. I'm not lying. You can take them. I'm out of tricks, and I'm not a fighter. At least, not enough to fight a freaking ninja!"

The girl smiles and nods her head. Looking at Emica again, I make the first move. Slowly and carefully walking toward the girl, I take the bag from her hand.

"Uhhh," I say, clearing my throat. "Thank you?"

The girl smiles and nods again.

"I'm going to call the police," I say, stepping away. "Don't go anywhere."

While Emica watches the thief, I pull my cell phone out and call the police. Thankfully, the police arrived at the store in a few minutes. Unfortunately, they're not the only ones.

"Nemo," my parents shout. Getting out of their car, they both run and hug me. I have to fight my mother back as she kisses my face.

"Mom. Mom! Stop! Please."

"Oh, Nemo," my mother starts, "What is wrong with you!"

"What?"

My mother's and father's smiles turn upside down. Their eyebrows tilt, and their eyes go red.

"Nemo," my dad shouts. "What did you do all of this? Going after the thief who stole the glass flowers? Chasing her all over the city? Fighting her?"

"I didn't fight her," I say. "She surrendered on her own."

"Still," my dad says, shaking with rage. At least, I think it's rage. "Nemo! Nemo. Nemo. Still. I don't want you chasing after thieves. You're my son. I don't want you getting hurt."

Looking at my dad, looking him right in his eyes, I nod.

"Okay. I...I promise I will try not to get hurt."

Nodding his head, my dad and mom both hug me again. As they hug me, I see Emica hiding behind the store corner.

"Uhh, so yeah," I say, pushing my parents off me. "I'm okay. I'm not hurt. Dad, the museum got their glass flowers back. The police are arresting the real thief. It was not the Green Emerald Ninja. I have to go. I will be right back!"

I run off before my parents can say anything. Running to the corner, I smile when I see Emica waiting for me.

"Hey," I say.

"Hello," Emica replies.

I clear my throat and scratch the back of my head as I try to talk.

"I just wanted to say thank you. For everything. I really appreciate it."

"I should be thanking you, too," Emica replies, bowing before me.

"Why? I didn't do anything. It was all you."

"I should be thanking you because you did all this to prove my friend's innocence."

"Oh, that? Yeah, well, I always knew he was innocent."

"How?"

"Just," I say, looking at Akio. "Just a hunch. You know, a guess."

"Well, thank you again."

Emica bows her head before using her chigiriki to fly into the air. I watch as she swings from building to building before disappearing.

As Emica disappears, I can't help but feel a little sad. Breathing in, I sigh and walk back to my parents.

"Is everything okay," Akio asks.

"What? Yeah. Everything is okay. Everything is okay. Everything is okay."

As I walk, I turn my head and look at where Emica was a few seconds ago.

Police Officer:

"No," I shout. I shoot my partner with an evil glance before turning back to the road. "Your wife made me promise to watch over you."

"Oh, come on," my crybaby partner whines. "You don't have to tell her."

"No!"

"It's just right there!"

"No! We are not stopping for fried chicken. Besides, we are working right now. We have to get the girl to the station and process her."

My partner shakes his head. He huffs, puffs, and crosses his arms. He then turns around and looks at the girl.

"What," he screams, jumping back.

"What," I say. "What is it?"

"The girl," my partner answers, "She's gone."

"What!"

I turn around and see an empty backseat. Stomping on the brakes, my partner and I get out of the car and check the backseat. As we check it, I find the door open, and my partner finds an empty pair of handcuffs.

"The girl escaped," my partner says. "Like she was Houdini. Are you sure you don't want some fried chicken?"

Fox:

Slipping the handpin back into my orange hair, I reach into my pocket and pull out my apartment key. Unlocking my front door, I walk inside, and the second I do, someone in her little white pajamas with stars greets me.

"Big sis," Celeste says, walking up to me.

"Celeste," I say, dropping down to hug my little sister.

"How was your day at work, Big Sis?"

"Not too bad," I reply. "Not too bad. I worked hard, but it wasn't enough. I lost some money."

"Oh no."

Celeste's smile disappears, and it breaks my heart.

"Hey," I say. "Don't worry, sis. Yeah, I lost some money this time, but I won't next time. I promise."

I grab my little sister's hand with both my hands and firmly shake it. Celeste's smile returns, and I stand up.

"Come on," I say, nudging my sister. "You should be sleeping. Why are you out of bed anyway?"
