Chapter 24 - THUMBS UP

Carl and Careen also took their leave, leaving only the young lady and his Dad, who didn't seem to mind, being so caught up in their conversation.

Torren was caught up in his thoughts as he hurried along, 'Shawney looks so amazing, I can't believe she transformed from that old, outdated dress to this raving beauty. I should not have turned down her invitation in the first place, but I didn't think about getting her a gown; Dad is still a romantic at heart.'

Seeing so many suits hanging in his closet, Torren wondered which to wear when the knock came.

He turned to look and see who was at the door. Smiling, he saw Shawney leaning on the door lintel. "Come, help me choose something, Miss Wayman. I feel so confused seeing so many suits."

Shawney ignores the way he addresses her, "Don't you know what to wear?"

Standing next to him, Shawney browsed through the closet, which was filled with a selection of high-quality tailored suits.

Choosing a white suit among so many lovely ones, Shawney handed him and then removed the jacket from the red suit and replaced it with the white. "Now look at how perfect it matches. Here you go, hurry and change into this, it will look lovely, and we will look like a real couple."

"Thank you, that is an excellent choice, Miss Wayman!"

"Now you complete your change, and I will wait downstairs for you." Shawney left the room pleased with the choice.

She thanked the Lord for answering her prayer, knowing how she wanted to make this night so special for both of them.

Closing the door behind her, she hurried out.

Train, on the other hand, sits waiting, ignoring the time and the crying child. He is just so happy Torren has changed his mind and decided to join them for dinner.

He noticed when Shawney stepped out the door, how her face was flushed and glowing with excitement.

Entering the living room, Shawney heard the child crying, wanting to know why the child was crying so much.'

Asking the Nanny, "Ma'am, why is the child crying so much?"

Liz looked up, frustrated with all the crying, but smiled none the same, responding, "She hasn't been drinking her tea for a few days now, and she is a bit cranky."

Shawney slanted a glance at Mr MacCarty, wondering why he hadn't taken the crying child, although her crying was so heartwrenching.

Bending towards the caregiver, she took the child, who was sweating profusely. With her sweet soothing voice, she said, "Come, honey, tell Auntie why you are not drinking your tea?"

When Gretta lurches towards Shawney and hugs her, Shawney laughs joyfully as she embraces the child lovingly.

Train's keen observation didn't escape Shawney's eyes, especially how Gretta clings to her and quiets down immediately.

Shawney realised then that Mr MacCarty intentionally wanted to see her reaction towards the child, and the child's behaviour towards her.

Shawney sat down, putting her in her lap, only to see him give her a thumbs-up with a bright smile. Shawney immediately instructed the Caregiver, "Kindly bring me a fresh bottle of her tea."

Fear consumed Liz's heart, "Ma'am, your pretty dress will be soiled, she kept spitting out her tea."

Shawney became more stern, "Did I say something? Get me a fresh bottle of tea now?"

Still stunned by the child's behaviour towards the guest, Liz hurried along and did what the guest requested.

When she returned with the tea, Train volunteered to feed the child, "Shawney, let me feed her before she soils your dress and ruins the evening. Come to Papa, honey."

"Nope!" Train was not a bit surprised, especially by how the child was clinging to Shawney's hand.

Watching Shawney place the bottle in her hand, "Now be a good girl for Aunty and drink your tea."

Shawney noticed how Liz was worried, as she hurried and placed a towel in front of her dress, so it wouldn't get soiled.

When she drank out all of her tea without spewing a single mouthful, Liz was left dumbfounded, "I can't believe this child."

When her eyes close, Shawney ask, "How do you mean, Ma'am?"

Still baffled by the child's behaviour, "Ma'am, she hasn't drunk her tea in days and she keeps giving trouble, and not settling down."

As soon as Liz completes her sentence, Torren enters the living room and sees Shawney holding the child, who is fast asleep on her lap. Immediately, he becomes angry and hastily asks, "Liz, what is going on?"

Shawney angrily said, "Will you two stay quiet? You will wake her up."

Torren felt like slapping Liz, slanting a glance at Liz and then at Shawney. Going to Li,z speaking softly so Shawney wouldn't hear him, "You should take care of your children."

Becoming afraid, Liz quickly apologises, "Sorry, Sir," then Liz quickly goes to Shawney and says, "Let me take her, Madam, and thanks very much for your help."

Shawney recalls Mr MacCarty's words, "He doubts Torren remembered the children."

She glimpsed Torren's way, but he kept looking at Liz; he was even becoming irritable. 'I must help fix this problem, but not tonight.'

When Liz left with the child, Shawney stood up and went towards Torren. "Torren, are you ready to go?"

Ignoring the way he kept frowning his face and pinching his brow, Shawney held his hand. "Why are you angry? Do you want to ruin your mood because of a child?" Tapping his shoulder, "Come on, cheer up, it's our Valentine's Dinner and I want to enjoy this evening." Seeing him nod, a smile appeared on his face, they then left the house.
