Destiny gripped the passenger door as Mathew drove out of Bailey Falls.
She had tried to explain what she had seen, but every attempt ended with her going quiet. How could she tell her father that Ezra—the man who had watched over their family, who had been part of her childhood—had stood in a clearing while a girl bled against a tree?
How could she explain that the worst part was not the blood or the chains?
It was the way he had looked at her.
Without surprise.
Without remorse.
As though her presence was a problem to be managed.
Mathew glanced at her.
"You said you saw Ezra."
Destiny nodded.
"Are you certain?"
She turned towards him.
"I saw his face."
Mathew tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"Could it have been a memory? Something you dreamed?"
"I don't know what it was." Her voice trembled. "But I know what I saw."
He did not argue.
That frightened her more than if he had.
After a few minutes, his phone rang through the car's hands-free system.
