Shepherd had a hard time believing the story spun by Six Lights. It was so incredibly unbelievable across all steps. The only aspect that prevented him from outright rejecting it was the Guidebook he held. The Guidebook was also something unbelievable, so it wasn't like Shepherd hadn't seen anything supernatural.
It would explain the extreme difference in skill, and why Six Lights was leagues better than the best of what any other person could offer. That hunt he put up against Akiol was still something he thought about. That utterly unfair battle. . .
There was a little merit to their story, but just a little.
He didn't really care for the origin of their strength as long as it was a legitimate source. His first and only goal was to help as many players as possible. Truthfully Six Lights was a strength he hoped he could call upon if there ever came a time the Guidehands had a foe so powerful they couldn't defeat it themselves.
