Chapter 15 - Deception and Deception

The Next Morning

"Listen I'm sending over a list of organizations, look into them and find the one best suited for our future research. Pay special attention to the second chance halfway house, find out whose behind it and get back to me." Lex looked up from the phone as a pleasant smile appeared on his face. Lana was inching closer and closer still wrapped in a blanket, she smiled back as she walked around his desk planting herself in his lap.

"How are you feeling?" He couldn't help but ask.

"Like everything is about to change," Lex could only agree, they had reached a fork in the road. No matter which path they chose things were bound to get crazy.

"Well, the helicopter will be here soon, you should get dressed there's a long flight ahead of us." Lex spoke but Lana didn't budge, she seemed to sink into his arms instead.

"Mhmm, are we headed to metropolis?" She asked.

"Nope, We're going to see someone that can't be bought. My father's reach within metropolis it too strong, Central City is a much better choice."

Central City

Lex and Lana sat inside of the doctors office waiting on the doctor to finally arrive. It was one of the drawbacks to travelling to Central City, he wasn't looking for a doctor he could buy off. He was looking for a doctor he could trust. Looking at Lana he noticed she had wrapped her arms around herself as she stared off into space.

"I'll ask the nurses how much longer this will take," Standing up he exited the room. He didn't look for a nurse though, instead he headed down the hall before taking a turn. A man wearing a white lab coat with a clip board in hand stood waiting.

"You must be doctor Henry Allen," Reaching out Lex shook his head noticing the grip immediately.

"I don't appreciate whatever it is you're doing Mr.Luthor, if you want me to fake some tests or lie for you you've come to the wrong hospital." Yes this was that Henry Allen and as of now he the upstanding doctor who'd never go against he own moral code.

"Listen Doctor, I'm well aware of my reputation that's now why i'm here. You see the girl in there is someone I love-"

"If you love her why all the secrecy?" Henry tilted his head slightly waiting for Lex's response.

"It's not her I don't trust, it's my father. He's the kind of person that could fake a pregnancy, so I'm asking you to run all of the tests. To make sure that she's healthy and that her body is telling the truth." He was sure that all of that sounded convoluted and full of paranoia but he needed to be sure. "I'm doing all of this to protect her, imagine thinking you're pregnant only to realize it was someone using meds to trick your body into thinking that."

"Fine, I'll run your test, but if she asks me why I'll tell her what you just told me." Lex could only nod in response.

"I'll introduce you," Turning back Lex walked towards the room Lana was in. He wasn't angry or disappointed in Henry, there were plenty of conversations he'd need to have with Lana. Opening the door he smiled as he looked at her.

"Lana this is Doctor Henry Allen," standing up she shook his hand.

"It's nice you meet you Doctor Allen."

"It's nice to meet you as well miss Lang, looking at your chart it seems we have plenty of tests to run. Before we begin I want to ask you a few questions."

Lex acted as the supporting boyfriend as the routine questions were asked. There was no doubt that he loved Lana. He didn't wish to manipulate, lie, and cheat her into staying in a relationship with him. His whole life had been full of mistrust, and although he wished to trust Lana he understood human nature. More then that though he understood Lana's nature, she'd despise him if she knew he was running these tests for different reasons. But she wouldn't despise him for having the test run, she'd despise him for not telling her. If he had to choose between telling Lex about the tests and telling her bout Brainiac he'd choose the former. So as they sat in the room listening to Henry talk about the results Lex didn't avoid the look the good doctor gave him.

"I'll be right back with the rest of the results, it'll take five minutes max and then you two can be on your way." Henry stood giving Lex one last look before exiting the room.

Lana's smile dropped as the door closed and she turned to lex with despair in her eyes. "This is taking longer than I thought it would and please tell me why he keeps looking at you like that?"

"He wants me to tell you about the other tests that he's running." Lex let go of Lana's hand as he said those words. Turning to her he could see the confusion in her eyes.

"What are you talking about?"

"You don't like secrets Lana but-"

"Just tell me, Lex," Her voice was full of venom and Lex couldn't help but feel a hint of excitement as a part of Lana he had rarely seen began to appear.

"A few months back my father came to me with a plan. It was just after dark thursday and he was afraid that you would leave me after the whole Zod thing."

"Why would I?" Lana asked the venom still in her voice.

"Whether it's my father or Clark they don't understand how strong you truly are. But I do which is why I want you to understand that I didn't keep this a secret to protect you. I just thought it was so disgusting that it was better if it was forgotten about." Lex looked into her eyes and saw no sign of her anger relenting. Sighing he could only continue. "My father proposed a plan to keep you in the relationship. He wanted to use drugs to fake a pregnancy, he even bought off your doctor."

There it was out in the open and Lex could only watch as the cogs turned in Lana's head. The realization of why they had flown to Central city. The reason for all the extra tests, he only hoped that it all made sense in her head. He waited patiently for her to speak but the words never came as the door was once again opened by Doctor Henry.

"Judging by the atmosphere I'll take a guess and say that he told you," Henry locked eyes with Lana as she nodded. "That's good, well the results are in," Closing the door behind him Henry placed his clipboard down. "Lana, you're pregnant, I made sure to check everything twice. Lex's means may have been a bit deceptive but his worries were justified. Take it easy on him, you two are free to go. I'll recommend a good obgyn, congratulations on your future."

"Thank you, Doctor Allen," Lana's smile returned if only for a second.

The helicopter ride back home was quiet, well what else would one expect especially from Lana? He understood her need for transparency in a relationship but he could never be completely transparent not even with her.

Lex extended a hand helping her out of the helicopter even as her face remained stoic. Lex could only shake his head as she walked off. Looking at the helicopter pilot he waved him off before following after Lana. Peeking into his office he didn't see her, going towards their bedroom he frowned as he heard the sound of a zipper. Stepping inside he saw her putting together a bag and honestly he was shocked.

"What are you doing Lana?" Lex asked the obvious.

"I'm going to Chloe's," a simple reply that left Lex worried.

"Don't you at least want to talk about this? Running away from our problems doesn't mean they'll simply disappear." If she was running away so easily now what would happen in the future when similar situation happened?

"You're right, I just need a couple of days to think about how all of this makes me feel." Lana looked at him showing not only her determination but also that she wasn't simply running away. Lex could respect that she wished to allow her thoughts to ruminate.

"I'll drive you then, " he said.

"Chloe's already on her way," Lex sighed at those words.

And so he could only watch as Chloe pulled into the driveway. She looked uncomfortable while the curiosity of a reporter shined behind her eyes.

...

Lana held back tears as they headed down the empty highway roads surrounding Smallville. "I don't know if I can do this Chloe."

"Do what? Did Lex not take the news well?" Chloe kept driving but couldn't help but worry about the current state of her friend.

"I thought he had taken it well until he decided to fly us all the way to Central city to run tests and do a check-up." Lana could no longer hold back as tears began to fall from her eyes.

"You flew all the way to Central city for a doctor's appointment?" Chloe shook her head confused. "Why?" She scrunched her eyebrows almost throwing her hands up in the air but remembered she was driving.

"He was worried that his father was drugging me into thinking I was pregnant." Lana wiped her eyes as she spoke.

"That's paranoid even for Lex," Chloe commented.

"I know but then he starts talking about these plans his father had made after dark Thursday. He was worried I would leave Lex, he even bought off my family doctor."

"I guess some people don't change, so besides the obvious reason being that family is crazy why are you leaving the mansion?"

"I just need time to think. If I'm being completely honest Chloe I don't want my child raised in all of that." Lana rested her head against the window as Chloe continued to drive sad for her friend.
