Chapter 21 - Chapter Twenty-one: Leanunya

Leanunya looked around Wolferans house but only saw a manicured garden, thick forest and a small dirt road leading out. She then looked at his house and flicked her tail feeling injustice. He had a large mansion. It was so unfair to her. Just how many people had Wolferan caught to make such a fortune to have such a home while herself didn't even have one.

She then looked at Wolferan glaring. She had worked hard over the years and was still only living day by day. This injustice got her mind off the many questions she had about magic. Although it made her dislike Wolferan for his wealth and home. He had everything she wanted, a home and what she could tell a peaceful life.

She grumbled silently for a bit before noticing there was no carriage or wagon to take them to Rynion. She looked at Wolferan suspiciously, getting a bad feeling. She flicked her tail and looked around for their means of travel but saw none, not even a couple of horses. Leanunya then asked.

"How are we going to be traveling?" Wolferan replied, "I'll be carrying you while I fly. It is the fastest way to get to Rynion. And, besides that, you are actually very light weight." She lashed her tail, "You are going to carry me? No! Absolutely not! I refuse to be carried!"

Wolferan huffed, "You have no choice in the matter. It is faster and safer." Leanunya huffed,"safer for you or me?" "Both of us. There are many rogue bandits between here and Rynion and it is faster to fly as well. I want to get this over with as soon as possible and not have to deal with this in the first place but I need to. If what you said before was true you never killed and innocent people then you would be a vigilante working for money and not a criminal."

Leanunya frowned, "What difference does it make if what I said is true or not?" "It makes a world of difference to me. You wouldn't be a criminal but a vigilante. Those are two different things. It would determine how you are treated. If you lied it would change nothing but if you are telling the truth it would change everything."

Leanunya frowned, thinking. Why would it change everything? She just didn't understand. Though she didn't want to be carried, she knew she had no chance to change his mind or cause him to choose a different way of travel. She sighed deeply though winced slightly from the pain in her ribs.

"Fine, I guess you can carry me. It's not like I could make you change your mind nor could I win if we fought, especially in my condition." Wolferan looked at her before nodding, "that is true, you would stand no chance of winning if we fought."

He walked over after a servant walked over and gave him a bag. He then spoke,"we are now ready to go. I won't drop you, unless you struggle to get away then I can't promise anything." She huffed, "I'm not stupid and who said anything about you dropping me?"

Wolferan shrugged before picking her up bridal style. She did notice he was being careful of her broken wing and her broken ribs. As such his holding her didn't cause much pain. She was glad for this as the least amount of pain she had to endure the better for her to think clearer. She didn't fight him as he took flight.

Leanunya looked down as he flew and blinked seeing them leave the ground faster than she could ever even when she flew without any extra weight or jumping from a cliff or tree. She then saw his house was really quite large with a large garden around it. To one side she could see a barn and figured it was for livestock.

She looked at Wolferan and frowned. She doubted even if she was able to, she couldn't escape from him. She sighed silently and looked to where they were going and watched as the ground passed underneath them. As he had said he wouldn't drop her. She just couldn't understand his thinking and after a bit asked.

"Why does it matter if I'm a criminal or not?" Wolferan looked at her and spoke, "a criminal deserves to be locked up especially after what you have done killing so many people. But if you really never killed anyone who didn't deserve death or you only killed in self-defense then it makes a world of difference. Some think it doesn't matter but I have lived long enough to know it does matter."

Leanunya frowned, "Either way I have killed people. It doesn't matter why. My hands are still stained with blood." Wolferan looked at her and laughed after a moment before speaking, "Even though you have killed so many you actually care about that? Kid that is funny. Never have I met someone like you who thinks that way after killing so many. You sound like someone who has only killed one person. The killers I've caught before, never have said that before."

Wolferan looked at her, "perhaps you really have never killed anyone who didn't deserve it and that's why you can still say that. I don't know yet but I will find out. I myself have killed many but I am not stuck in such sentimental outdated thinking. You child have much to learn."

Leanunya huffed,"I'm not a child. Also what difference does it make? A death is a death." He spoke, "the killing of a person who deserves it will make a better place for those that person caused suffering or trouble for. But killing an innocent person will only bring pain and suffering for others around the person killed. The difference in their deaths is the outcome. Is it for the better or worse for those around that person?"

Leanunya blinked and went silent thinking. She had never thought about her killing in that way. She had never stuck around after a job and learned the outcome of what happened to those around the person she killed. She only ever saw the blood she spilled. She frowned, swishing her tail in thought. Did those around those she killed have a better time?

She knew she took jobs that she found the person to be bad or evil but did it really help those around them or make things worse? She now wanted to know. If she could discover this maybe she could discover if she really did any good for those around the person she had killed. But, if she did no good then did she kill someone innocent?

Leanunya looked at Wolferan and after a moment spoke, "I.. I never thought about that. I don't know if any of those I killed did any good for those around them…" Wolferan blinked and looked at her, "you really are just like a child, kid." She hissed, "I'm not a child. I'm almost nineteen."

Wolferan looked at her, "oh, You look much younger. I guess you really aren't a child. When will you turn nineteen?" She flicked her tail, "in two months and a week." Wolferan nodded, "aw ok then. Where did you learn? Or what school did you go to before the king banned hybrids?" She looked at him, "I never went to any school, I was left on my own to fend for myself"

Wolferan looked at her surprised, "then how. Do you know how to read?" Leanunya spoke, ""self taught though I'm not that great at it I only know enough to manage." Wolferans jaw went slack before he asked, "what about math? And everything else?" She huffed, "all self taught. I never had anyone to ask to learn from or such. I only learned what I was able, while on the run. Before then I couldn't even read anything or do much math. What difference does that make?"

Wolferan spoke, "it doesn't. I was just surprised by it. Most who never were taught never could read to begin. I never learned until someone sat down and taught me. It makes me wonder if you had been taught, would you have been a scholar instead of an assassin." Leanunya looked at him, "I doubt it would have made much difference."

Wolferan nodded as he flew along into silence. Leanunya didn't break the silence as she looked to the ground passing below thinking about what he had said. She then started to wonder why he was asking the questions he asked. She didn't understand why he asked them nor what difference they made. As such she had answered them honestly. She saw no harm in them.
