Chapter 19 - speechless

"Maya," Hazel gently called out to her. Maya stared off into thin air. Her body was her worst enemy. Maya's eyes moved to look at Hazel but her body wouldn't allow her to move much more than that. "Do you want something to eat?" Hazel was cautious, trying her best to not upset Maya.

Maya looked away. Hazel sighed before walking out of the room. A silent tear shed from Maya's eye. She couldn't move. She felt as if she were frozen and it's not like she could talk to anyone about it because her body wouldn't let her.

Nobody knows why Maya is behaving in such a radical way. Charlie was the most frustrated with the situation. It's been a little over a week since Maya rejected Ace as her mate and her body is pretty much going into shock because of it.

"This shouldn't be happening! She's a human for crying out loud!" Charlie's voice boomed off the walls of Zac's apartment. Zac sighed before taking his eyes off of his computer screen, finally giving Charlie his attention.

"No, she isn't." Zac pointed out catching Charlie off guard.

"What?"

"Maya," Zac started as he stood up out of his chair. "She isn't human. She's a celestial being. Another mortifying creation by the Moon Goddess herself, but she isn't human," Charlie plopped down on the couch. He looked as if he was in disbelief.

Zac leaned back on his desk, watching Charlie's reaction. It was a shock to all of them when Maya started to react to the rejection the way she is, especially when she was the one to reject him. Zac knew what this meant. When one wolf is rejected, they naturally start to pull towards each other depending on how strong the bond was on. Maya and Ace may have not had a genuine romantic connection, but there was still a genuine love, whether it was portrayed as romantic or purely innocent. Of course, Charlie knew nothing of this and Zac refused to be the one to tell him.

Ace was actually taking the breakup much better than Maya. He was still 100% functional, but, he suffered a lot mentally. Ace was sent spiraling in his own depression. Burying himself in work to distract him from the fact that his chest feels like his heart was physically torn out from the center.

Ace paced around the cellular in the basement, eyes occasionally meeting the other pair that set across the room. The air was thin and freezing. The small window that sat near the ceiling on the wall furthest from the door was caged behind steel metal bars with rust growing on them. The other set of eyes were glowing. Making their presence known.

The color of their eyes were captivating. "You know, I don't have what you want," They crooked. Dried blood stained around their lips, a trail following down to their chin. Ace scoffed. His pace got faster as his breathing became uneven. "Let me go, Ace," Once again Ace scoffed.

They coughed, spitting up blood. A look of displeasure clouded their features as the metallic taste of blood filled their mouth. "Fine, can I at least let me have some water?"

Ace grabbed a water bottle from the bucket beside him before tossing it at the person. They groaned as they caught the water bottle. Pain rose in their wrist, shooting all the way up their arm. "I'm dying, and you grant me this one wish?" They chuckled as they chugged down as much of the water as they could in one shot. "How refreshing," They claimed before chugging down the rest of the water. Ace stopped pacing completely. His stomach began to twist in knots. He knows this feeling all too well. Without a second thought, Ace left his 'guest' locked downstairs in their cellular without a single word uttered as he darted straight for his front door.

The night breeze slapped against Ace's bare skin. The wind caused the leaves to fly around in a miniature tornado. He ran. Faster than he's ever had in his human form. The knot in his stomach tightened with every step that he took. He was close. He could feel it. Pausing suddenly when he saw slumped against the base of the tree.

Maya.

Ace rushed over to her. Maya's body shook from the cold. She was only dressed in a think black oversized t-shirt and short fluffy night shorts. Her feet were bare, cuts covering the bottom of them. Her lips were stained with a haze of blue. Ace could hear her teeth chattering from more than two feet away. Her hair was pulled back and out of her face into a high bun with loose hairs tickling the back of her neck.

Maya peeled her eyes open when she felt herself being picked up. Ace had his arms wrapped around her, carrying her bridal style. Her shaking arms wrapped themselves around his neck, trying to get closer to his warmth. She huffed out some air of content, enjoying the natural warmth that his body radiated.

Ace sat in a chair next to his bed. His head laid on the edge of the bed, sound asleep as his hand tightly clenched onto Maya's. She stared at his face. His was longer than she'd ever seen it. He has stubble growing which was definitely a sight to see. Maya's fingers raked through his silky black hair making him groan and peel his eyes open.

He gave her a groggy smile, showing a peek of his pearly whites. Maya tilted her head before giving Ace a small smile in return. "How'd you sleep?" He asked as he sat up, pulling completely away. His voice was deep and raspy. His arms shot over his head, stretching his sore limbs. Maya shrugged her shoulders, tugging the blankets closer to herself. Ace's brows furrowed. "Maya, speak, love."

Maya's eyes widened. Ace had a hawk eye. Keen to catching on to the small things like this. She knew this but was still hoping he wouldn't notice, especially not this soon. "Maya," Ace warned. Sighing, Maya nodded her head. Opening her mouth, Maya tried to force the words out. Her voice was completely gone. She could only manage to push out the sound of the first letter before her voice completely stranded her. Ace's eyes widened in realization. "What the fuck?"
