Having the children know about Will was a huge relief. There was obviously the risk of them telling the other villagers about him, but Sister Lina could just play it off as the kids having a wild imagination. Will could attend the classes as well and sit at one of the stools in the corner taking notes.
Will asked Sister Lina why they didn't learn about biology or other sciences, she replied that she didn't know much and that there wasn't much need for it. Hunters and butchers would eventually learn about the anatomy of the animals through experience and apprenticeships. In addition doctors and healers went to specialized expensive schools, and was usually reserved for the rich. Knowing this Will made a decision and asked Sister Lina if he could teach sciences to the children one hour a day. There were two reasons for this: One was that he wanted to pay her back for everything she had done to him, including the villagers indirectly protecting him by keeping the village safe. The second reason was that he was bored of the old classes and there was a lot less to do during the winter.
Sister Lina agreed, and so began Will's career as a teacher. His classes included mostly the basics. He drew pictures of the human body, showing the most important organs and bones. He also explained atomic structure and behavior, the children and Sister Lina had a hard time comprehending it. However Will persisted and even did some basic experiments in class to demonstrate. He mainly wanted them to understand the different states of matter, and how it affected pressure and temperature. He then expanded on the topic explaining how these atomic behaviors in tandem with the sun's heat, affected weather and the ecosystem around. All this was building up to the topic of fauna and flora, explaining nature, evolution and how every animal, insect and even humans affected the circle of life.
Will spent the entire winter teaching these topics, his hopes were that the kids could pass some of this understanding to the other villagers, if not at least the future generation would be a lot smarter. The one who benefited the most was Clara. Apparently she was the mayor's daughter, and was also being tutored to be an alchemist, which Will assumed was this world's version of a chemist or scientist. She had applied the knowledge of atomic behavior to her own lessons, and apparently surprised her teacher in a good way. She and Will had become good friends, at least to the extent a middle-aged man in a Goblins body could be friends with a kid.
In addition to all this, Will would keep doing the chores and help Sister Lina with cooking meals. One of the toughest jobs he had, was shoveling snow at the entrance to the church. He would do this very early in the morning to avoid people seeing him, his night vision really helped him, and so did the moonlight reflecting off of the snow. After the second month of winter, Will was noticing less and less snow every morning. He got excited knowing that this meant winter was probably over, but it also meant the town was going to get busy again. Clara had told Will, that as soon as the snow melts there should be a new caravan of people and supplies arriving to the town, and that this would be the last one provided by the capital. This was both good news and bad news for Will. This being the last caravan, meant that the town walls would soon be erected, making it a lot more difficult for him to visit the forest. However, this also meant that the town itself would be safer, and there would be plenty of supplies and food to go around.
Spring was still a week or two away, so Will decided to prepare some equipment. He mainly needed tools and weapons, and started asking some of the children to buy stuff for him in the market. He had gathered a sizable amount of copper coins before winter started, but wasn't sure if it was enough. The first thing he learned was that the currency was a base twenty system. There were copper coins, which was the smallest unit of currency. Then a big copper coin which had a value of twenty small copper coins. Then a silver coin, which was worth twenty big copper coins or four hundred small copper coins. The value would multiply by twenty every iteration of a new coin, and after silver there was gold and platinum. Clara had interjected into the conversation by stating there was also paper currencies, but those could only be used and issued by the royal family, and was mostly used in exchanging land or mines. Will asked how much an affordable meal would cost, and the answer was between four to six copper, depending on the place.
Will counted his savings and was pleasantly surprised by the amount. He was a dozen copper coins short of a silver. He asked several of the children to go on a supply run for him, and he would give them a couple of extra copper coins for the help. Sister Lina gave him a weird look, wondering where Will got all the money from. However she didn't press him on the issued, knowing Will, she knew he wouldn't have stolen it from people.
