...
Himiko's eyes narrowed slightly. She realized instantly that the man before her was not just a warlord, he was a scholar of warfare. She was gauging him just as heavily as he was gauging her. "The earth provides many secrets to those who know how to listen," Himiko answered carefully, refusing to give away her knowledge too easily. "I understand the breathing of the volcanoes. I know how to extract the yellow powder that burns the lungs, and how to forge bronze that does not shatter in the cold."
"Sulfur. And alloy tempering," Lie Fan translated her mystical terms into the harsh, precise vocabulary of mainland science. He tapped his finger against the armrest of his throne. "You possess a brilliant, analytical mind, Himiko. It is a tragedy that it was wasted on parlor tricks to frighten island farmers."
Himiko bristled slightly at the insult, but the absolute truth of his words, backed by the terrifying reality of her defeat, kept her silent.
"I do not waste talent in my empire," Lie Fan declared, making his final, absolute decision. "You will not be executed. You will not be paraded in a cage. You will be assigned to the Imperial Workshop as an alchemist and a metallurgical consultant. You will work alongside my greatest engineers to refine the sulfur extraction processes from your native islands."
Lie Fan's eyes hardened, ensuring she understood the strict reality of her new life. "But do not mistake my appreciation for your intellect as trust. You will be under absolute, heavy guard at all hours. You will be provided a comfortable estate, endless resources for research, and the finest tools in the world. But if you attempt to manipulate my people, or if you attempt to flee, the punishment will be swift and absolute."
Himiko looked at the young Emperor, a complex whirlwind of emotions warring within her. She was a captive, yes. But for the first time in her life, she was being offered a chance to study the true, limitless potential of science without having to hide behind the veil of a goddess.
She bowed deeply, her forehead touching the marble. "I accept your terms, Emperor. I will learn the secrets of your thunder."
The massive wheels of the Hengyuan Dynasty continued to turn, grinding the years into history. Three full months passed since the grand return of the eastern high command. The harsh, biting chill of winter had fully thawed, giving way to the vibrant, blooming warmth of spring across the central plains.
Deep within the quiet, sunlit confines of his imperial study, Lie Fan was engaged in the endless, grueling war of bureaucracy. Mountains of heavy bamboo scrolls and fine paper ledgers covered his massive desk. He was currently reviewing the complex taxation reports from the newly integrated southern provinces, aggressively ensuring that the grain quotas for the upcoming western campaigns were being meticulously met.
The study was silent, save for the soft scratching of his calligraphy brush and the distant, melodic chirping of spring birds in the palace gardens.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study were thrown open with a frantic, uncharacteristic lack of decorum.
Lie Fan looked up, his brow furrowing in slight irritation, fully prepared to reprimand the guard for the sudden intrusion. But the words died in his throat when he saw who had entered.
It was the Minister of Work, Liu Ye.
The brilliant engineer looked absolutely terrible, yet he radiated a manic, blinding joy. His usually pristine official robes were heavily stained with black grease, soot, and sweat. His hair was disheveled, and his face was smeared with ash. But his eyes, his eyes were wide, burning with the absolute, triumphant fire of a man who had just touched the face of the gods.
Behind him, walking with a much more composed, yet equally radiant excitement, were Zhuge Liang, Huang Chengyan, and the brilliant and beautiful Yue Ying. They, too, bore the undeniable physical marks of endless, grueling labor in the forges. Yue Ying's hands were stained with black grease, but she held Zhuge Liang's hand tightly, a testament to the profound bond they had forged over the anvil.
"Your Majesty!" Liu Ye practically shouted, completely ignoring all standard court protocols as he rushed toward the Emperor's desk. He fell to his knees, his hands trembling violently as he held up a rolled, grease-stained parchment.
Lie Fan immediately stood up, his heart accelerating. The sheer intensity radiating from his greatest minds told him that something monumental had just occurred. He dropped his brush, the black ink splattering across the taxation reports.
"Speak, Liu Ye," Lie Fan commanded, his voice tight with anticipation. "What has happened?"
Liu Ye took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to steady his racing heart. He looked up at the Emperor, tears of sheer, exhausted joy cutting clean tracks through the soot on his cheeks.
"It works, Your Majesty," Liu Ye whispered, his voice trembling with the weight of the new era. "By the heavens, the iron beast actually breathes."
Zhuge Liang stepped forward, bowing deeply, his serene face breaking into a massive, triumphant smile. "What the Minister is trying to say, Your Majesty, is that the massive, theoretical scaling equations provided by Yue Ying have been successfully executed. We have reinforced the primary boiler. We have successfully sealed the pressure valves using the new sulfur treated rubber."
Huang Chengyan laughed, a booming, exhausted sound of pure victory. "The pistons hold the pressure! The gears turn without shattering!"
Yue Ying stepped forward, bowing respectfully, her eyes shining with the pride of a woman who had just revolutionized the world.
"Your Majesty," Yue Ying announced, her voice clear and ringing with absolute certainty. "We have managed to complete the construction. The fires have been lit. The water is boiling. We have successfully created the world's very first, fully functioning, full scale steam carriage prototype."
The silence that followed her words was deafening.
Lie Fan stared at the four brilliant, soot stained minds before him. The endless bureaucracy on his desk faded into utter insignificance. The taxation of the southern provinces, the spies in Samatata, even the looming threat of the Kushan Empire, all of it briefly vanished, eclipsed by the sheer, terrifying magnitude of what this invention meant.
A functioning steam carriage.
It meant the absolute death of distance. It meant the ability to move thousands of tons of heavy artillery, millions of pounds of grain, and entire armies across the vast, continent spanning expanse of his empire without ever relying on the exhaustion of horses or the fickle winds of the rivers. It meant that the iron veins of the Hengyuan Dynasty were about to be filled with unstoppable, mechanized lifeblood.
A slow, terrifying, and deeply exhilarated smile spread across Emperor Lie Fan's face. He stepped out from behind his desk, walking down to the exhausted inventors.
"You have not just built a carriage," Lie Fan said, his voice dropping to a low, reverent whisper as he looked at each of them. "You have built the engine that will drag the entire world, kicking and screaming, into the future."
Lie Fan grabbed his black and gold imperial cloak from the stand, tossing it over his shoulders with a sharp, decisive snap.
"Show me," the Emperor commanded, his eyes blazing with visionary fire. "Take me to the workshop. I want to hear the iron beast roar."
Lie Fan did not hesitate. The heavy, ink-soaked calligraphy brush slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the polished mahogany desk. Thick, black ink splattered wildly across the meticulously tallied taxation reports of the southern provinces, ruining days of bureaucratic work in a single instant. He did not care.
"Take me to the workshop," Lie Fan commanded, his voice vibrating with a visionary fire that commanded the very air in the room. "I want to hear the iron beast roar."
He snatched his heavy black and gold imperial cloak from its wooden stand, tossing it over his broad shoulders with a sharp, decisive snap that echoed like a whip. Without waiting for a response, the Emperor bypassed the four stunned, soot-stained inventors and strode purposefully toward the heavy oak doors of the study.
The Yellow Ghost Bodyguards stationed outside the study were violently startled as the doors burst open. They instantly snapped to attention, their hands flying to the hilts of their swords, expecting an assassin. Instead, they saw their Emperor moving with a frantic, eager energy they had only ever witnessed on the eve of a massive military campaign.
"Clear the path to the Imperial Workshop!" Lie Fan barked to the captain of the guard. "Bring my carriage. Now!"
What followed was a chaotic, high-speed exodus from the serene, heavily manicured grounds of the inner palace. Heavily escorted by a detachment of fifty elite cavalrymen, the Emperor's carriage tore through the bustling streets of Xiapi. Inside the carriage, Lie Fan sat alongside the beaming Liu Ye, Huang Chengyan, Zhuge Liang, and the brilliant Huang Yue Ying. The air inside the cabin was thick with the smell of engine grease and old sweat, but it felt like the most intoxicating perfume in the world.
Liu Ye was practically vibrating in his seat, his hands continually wiping the black soot from his knees only to smear it further into the silk. Yue Ying and Zhuge Liang sat close together, their shoulders touching, exchanging quiet, exhilarated glances that spoke volumes of their shared triumph.
The royal procession rapidly left the wealthy merchant districts and the quiet academic halls behind, plunging deep into the highly restricted, heavily guarded industrial outskirts of the capital. The sky here was permanently stained a hazy gray from the endless rows of roaring blast furnaces.
They arrived at the outermost perimeter of the Imperial Workshop. It was a fortress unto itself, surrounded by massive stone walls and manned by hundreds of heavily armed imperial soldiers who were under strict orders to execute any unauthorized personnel on sight. The heavy iron gates shrieked open at the sight of the imperial banner.
The inventors eagerly led Lie Fan through a dizzying maze of heavily fortified iron foundries, sulfur refining stations, and assembly warehouses. The deafening cacophony of thousands of hammers striking anvils was overwhelming, but the group pushed past the main production lines. They navigated through a series of narrow, highly secure corridors until they finally reached a massive, secret, completely walled off dirt testing ground specifically built for this groundbreaking project.
The testing ground was a sprawling expanse of packed, hardened yellow dirt, encircling a track that stretched for nearly a mile. In the absolute center of this secure compound sat a massive, looming shape hidden entirely beneath heavy, oil-soaked canvas tarps. Dozens of trusted, hand-picked workshop apprentices stood guard around it, holding long iron poles.
"Pull them back!" Huang Chengyan shouted, his booming voice cutting through the ambient noise of the foundries. "Unveil it for the Son of Heaven!"
The apprentices moved with practiced synchronization. They grabbed the thick hemp ropes attached to the canvas and hauled backward with all their collective might. The heavy tarps slid off with a loud, abrasive shhhhk, kicking up a massive cloud of dust into the afternoon sun.
Lie Fan stood frozen, his eyes widening in absolute, genuine surprise. He had read the theoretical blueprints. He had seen the miniature, toy like prototype that Yue Ying had presented months ago. But nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared him for the sheer, imposing, terrifying majesty of the full scale beast that sat before him.
He was completely mesmerized.
It was a beautiful, chaotic monstrosity of industry. It was quite literally a heavily reinforced, iron clad carriage chassis, built massively wide and low to the ground to support an unimaginable weight. Strapped directly into the absolute center of this iron skeleton was a colossal, hissing iron steam boiler, held in place by thick steel bands and massive, fist sized rivets.
Thick, heavy iron pipes wrapped around the boiler like the metallic veins of a mechanical demon. Hissing brass pressure valves, slick with dark grease, protruded from the sides. Massive iron pistons, as thick as tree trunks, were mounted above the rear axles. The wheels themselves were not made of wood, they were solid, terrifyingly heavy discs of cast iron, studded with heavy grips to bite into the earth.
Furthermore, as Lie Fan slowly walked around the behemoth, ignoring the intense heat radiating from its dormant boiler, he was absolutely astonished to see the front compartment. They had actually managed to invent a primitive, highly complex form of a driver's wheel. It was a heavy, reinforced wooden helm, much like the wheel of a grand naval warship, mounted vertically on a thick iron column.
This helm was connected to the front axles via a dizzying, heavily greased array of thick iron chains and interlocking brass gears. It was specifically designed to manually control exactly where the incredibly heavy carriage would be going.
"By the heavens," Lie Fan whispered, reaching out to run a hand over the cold iron of a driving piston. His fingers came away slick with grease. "It is a leviathan of the earth."
The four peerless inventors, their faces smeared with black soot and their eyes shining with an almost manic pride, immediately stepped forward. They practically vibrated with the need to explain their masterpiece.
"Your Majesty, if it pleases you, allow us to show you the anatomy of this beast," Liu Ye said, stepping up to the rear of the carriage.
For the next hour, an incredibly rich, highly intellectual, and deeply passionate exchange took place in the dirt. The inventors took turns explaining to their Emperor exactly how this mechanical titan actually functioned, their voices overlapping in their sheer excitement.
First, the veteran engineers Liu Ye and Huang Chengyan proudly patted the massive iron boiler, ignoring the heat that would have burned a lesser man's hand.
"This is the heart of the beast, Your Majesty," Huang Chengyan explained, his booming voice filled with reverence. He pointed to a heavy iron hatch at the absolute rear of the carriage. "This is the primary coal furnace. We shovel highly combustible mainland coal directly into this belly. The fire superheats the massive internal water tank suspended directly above it."
Liu Ye seamlessly took over, tracing the path of the thick pipes with his grease stained fingers. "As the water boils, it creates an unfathomable amount of steam. But unlike a boiling pot where the steam escapes into the air, we have entirely trapped it. The boiler is completely airtight, sealed with the new sulfur treated rubber we developed. The steam has nowhere to go, so the pressure builds to a terrifying, explosive degree. This trapped, furious pressure is then funneled through these primary arterial pipes, directly into the heavy iron cylinders housed above the rear axles."
He slapped the side of a massive cylinder. "Inside these cylinders are the iron pistons. The pressurized steam forcefully, violently pushes the massive iron pistons up and down. That vertical kinetic energy is what we capture."
Next, Zhuge Liang stepped forward. The usually serene, elegant scholar was entirely in his element, his eyes burning with a brilliant, mechanical fire. He eloquently explained how the monstrous machine was actually commanded to move.
Zhuge Liang gestured to a complex array of heavy iron levers and brass dials situated right beside the driver's bench.
"The beast requires a master to unleash it, Your Majesty," Zhuge Liang explained, pointing to a glass covered gauge featuring a rudimentary needle. "This is our pressure monitor. When the furnace burns, the steam pressure rises. Once the internal pressure reaches this critical redline, the boiler is at maximum capacity. To start the carriage, the driver must grab this primary iron lever, the main release valve."
Zhuge Liang gripped the heavy lever, pantomiming the motion. "When this is forcefully pulled backward, it opens the floodgates. It instantly injects the highly pressurized, trapped steam directly into the piston chambers all at once. The sudden expansion of the steam violently forces the pistons down, which in turn cranks the main driving rod, violently turning the massive rear drive wheels."
Then Huang Yue Ying stepped up to the front of the carriage. She nimbly climbed up the iron footholds and took her place behind the heavy wooden helm. Her eyes shone with absolute, unapologetic pride as she looked down at the Emperor.
"Power is nothing without direction, Your Majesty," Yue Ying explained, her voice ringing clear over the hissing of the boiler. She gripped the wooden handles of the helm. "This is the steering mechanism. We could not simply use reins as one does with a horse."
She demonstrated the movement, straining her shoulders as she forcefully turned the heavy wheel to the right. As she did, the massive, greased iron chains beneath the floorboards groaned loudly. The gears clicked and ground against each other. Slowly, heavily, the front iron axle physically pivoted, turning the front wheels toward the right.
"By manually turning this wheel," Yue Ying explained, slightly breathless from the physical exertion, "the chains pull against a central pivot point on the front axle. It allows the carriage to turn left and right and navigate curves. However, because of the staggering weight of the cast iron chassis and the massive boiler, it requires immense physical upper body strength to turn the helm, especially when the carriage is moving at speed. A weak man cannot drive this machine."
Lastly, Liu Ye returned to the side of the carriage, his expression turning highly serious as he explained the most dangerous aspect of the machine: how to make the heavy iron beast stop.
"Momentum is our greatest ally, Your Majesty, but also our most terrifying enemy," Liu Ye stated. He pointed to a secondary, massive lever positioned near the driver's feet, and then pointed down to the massive iron wheels.
"When we need to slow down, or completely stop in place, the driver must execute a two-part sequence," Liu Ye explained, tapping the thick, reinforced wooden blocks that hovered just millimeters above the iron rims of the wheels. "First, they must completely cut off the primary steam valves using the hand levers. This effectively kills the engine's pressure, starving the pistons of their breath. Simultaneously, the driver must stand on this heavy foot lever with all their weight."
Liu Ye pressed down on the lever, and the heavy wooden blocks clamped tightly against the iron wheels. "These are friction brakes. They physically grind against the iron wheels, forcefully arresting the momentum through sheer friction. It is a violent, sparks flying process, but it is the only way to halt a beast of this magnitude."
