IRON ROAD: Race Across the Cosmos
Jonathan Lovan grew up in the Dump, the lowest layer of Crydon City, where the city deposits everything it no longer wants. His parents died in a crossfire nobody mourned. He learned to read machines like the way other people read faces. He learned to fix what others threw away.
He has never raced, but he thinks about it constantly.
When he hauls a broken hover-runner out of the east pile and rebuilds it piece by piece, something starts happening that the diagnostics can't account for. The machine does things it has no hardware to do. And then, one morning before dawn, a voice arrives. Calm, precise, and inside him.
He doesn't know what it is. He doesn't have a word for it yet.
What comes next is a long way up. The illegal underground circuits of Crydon's second layer. The official Federation leagues. Interplanetary stages. A galaxy-spanning championship that was designed to be unreachable by someone who started where he began. Along the way, he finds an engineer who documents what he can't explain, a strategist who turns a driver into something the underground has never seen, a woman who moves through grey channels for reasons she won't name, and a machine that stops being just a simple machine.
But the racing is not the whole story.
There is a threat older than any circuit, a verdict already reached in places Jonathan doesn't know exist, and a race coming that has nothing to do with trophies. One built for a single purpose, with a single prize, that someone decided long ago only one particular person could finish.
That person grew up in the Dump.
