He accepted that. He trained anyway, ran until he threw up, lifted until his hands bled, told himself that ordinary didn't have to mean useless. He was fine with being human in a world that had moved past human.
Then his father went to buy milk and never came back.
A demon killed him. A low ranked one. The kind that should have been cleared before it ever reached a residential street. The kind that a real hunter would have handled in seconds.
Kai couldn't do anything. He was six minutes away and completely, humiliatingly useless.
That was the night he stopped accepting it.
Eighteen months later, on a dark street in front of a child he'd never met, something inside Kai that three separate tests had sworn didn't exist finally cracked open. And what came out wasn't C-rank. Wasn't B-rank. Wasn't anything the Hunter Association had a name for yet.
Now the demons are noticing him.
And so is she — Rael, who fights like a hunter but isn't one, who knows things about Kai she shouldn't, who smiles like everything is already decided and he just doesn't know it yet.
She's dangerous. He knows it.
Doesn't seem to matter.
Born Zero is a progression fantasy about a boy who was told he had nothing — and what happens when nothing turns out to be the most dangerous thing in the world.
