When Arin Noir is six years old, his village is destroyed and he wakes up at the treeline with a mark on his arm that no one can explain — not the scholars, not the guild, not the man who finds him and decides to stay.
Under the guidance of Meron Erindel, one of the most capable practitioners alive, Arin spends nine years learning what he is. The sword first. Then the mark. Then the world — its history, its fractures, the eight noble families who have been quietly controlling it since a war that ended four centuries ago and never really stopped.
By the time he reaches Vael Academy, Arin is fifteen, B-rank certified, and carrying a dragon mark that has no precedent in any classification record. The academy is supposed to be neutral ground. It isn't. The same powers that destroyed his village, killed the people he trained alongside, and have been tracking him since his guild registration are entrenched in the city around him.
And the mark keeps developing. Keeps forming opinions. Keeps pointing at something in the world's history that powerful people would prefer stayed buried.
Arin doesn't know the full shape of it yet. But it's coming into focus. And when it does, the question won't be whether he's strong enough to face it. It'll be whether he's figured out what strength is actually for.
